The fabled Church of the Apostles discovered near Sea of Galilee

For years, researches had questioned its existence, despite the fact that it had appeared in ancient Byzantine pilgrimage itineraries. Now archeologists believe they have discovered the legendary Church of the Apostles that was said to have been built over the house of St. Andrew and St. Peter - two of Jesus's most important and influential followers - in the ancient city of Bethsaida.

The Byzantine church had been mentioned by early Christian pilgrims, notably the Bavarian bishop (and saint) Willibald in 725 A.D. “[Willibald] states that the church was in Bethsaida built over the house of Peter and Andrew, among the first disciples of Jesus,” Notley told Fox News.
The professor added that the church’s discovery is significant for at least two reasons. “First, until its recent discovery, many scholars questioned its existence. Although it is mentioned in Byzantine pilgrimage itineraries, many thought these reports mistaken,” he explained. “Of equal importance, the church indicates that there existed a living memory in the Christian community about the location of Bethsaida, home of Peter, Andrew and Philip (John 1:44).”

They found a weekly church bulletin in the remnants of the pews. Of course, because it was ancient times, the bulletin is etched on a stone tablet.

It appears to line up with other ancient texts.

The same way that archeologists know what other excavated sites are
Context, mentions in historical documents, clues discovered on-site, etc.

Same way we lose buildings today. Houses deteriorate, lower class people move nearby, property prices plummet. Before you know it it is just a dilapidated structure no one cares about.

There was a flier found nearby that said "The Church of The Apostles! Home of Peter! Home of Some Other Dude! Tours only 10 sheckels!"

The same way we'll probably forget where the church of Scientology was located.

Well, it's a ruin that's almost 2,000 years old. You also have to remember that Christians went through several bloody persecutions that would have halted worship there for long periods of time. And then you have the Arab conquests of the 7th century that probably put that place out of business for good.

Well, I have some information on where they might find St Andrew and St Peter's house, then!
