She is just lucky her children didn't die. There have already been pediatric deaths related to pertussis in the last couple years. Yes some get it and fully recover, but others end up in ICUs and some worsen and die....the point is that you just don't know and why gamble with your child's health like that?

Because it takes that many doses to achieve immunity
And it's not a lifelong immunity, hence the reason for needing the Tdap booster once you are an adult.
