American Scientist

Some perspective in this trying time.

quote:

The disease apparently removed the weakest individuals on a very broad scale over much of Europe, whether their frailty was due to poor immune systems, prior disease, or malnutrition.

quote:

We know the Black Death marked the beginning or, at the very least, an acceleration of a huge economic and sociological shift in Europe,” says DeWitte. It took 200 years for population levels to recover. In the meantime, the medieval system of serfdom collapsed, because labor was more valuable when there were fewer laborers. Despite the dearth of workers, there was more land, more food, and more money for ordinary people. “You might see this as a benefit to the laboring classes,” she says.

quote:

Descendants of plague survivors were more likely to live through their reproductive years, thus passing on whatever genetic advantages enabled their ancestors to survive the plague.

Question the decisions made by government and always ask who benefits.

Early on it was colloquially referred to as the "caucasian crusher" but it didn't stick for whatever reason. Such are the coincidences of history.

I learned this in Western Civ. The Black Death weakened the nobility's hold, which allowed for the rise of the middle class, democratic institutions, and modern economies. We owe our current way of life to the Black Death.

Which naturally leads one to question the decisions currently being made in this country and worldwide.

Millennials have the survival skills of a newborn. Generation X would destroy YouTube and enslave the whole lot of you.

Here is a jovial little jaunt from a recent musical. It's fitting for current times.
