Neilson Rizzuto is just weeks from walking out of a jail a free man -- less than 18 months after the crime. The news has left the district attorney and crash victims furious. Advertisement Officials with the Department of Corrections confirmed to WDSU Investigates that Rizzuto will get out of jail in 17 days. Despite being sentenced to five years, he'll only have spent about a year and half behind bars.

Here's why Rizzuto is being released: He received five years for each conviction, but Judge Ben Willard stacked those sentences to run concurrently. Willard suspended one year and Rizutto was given credit for time served.

Dude got good legal advice. He still sucks, but you can't blame him for accepting good advice.

Has nothing to do with good legal advice. It has to do with the absurd good time laws.

Let’s all wait for him when he walks out.

Because the charges he pleaded guilty to are not considered crimes of violence under Louisiana law, Rizzuto was not required to serve 85 percent of his sentenced before being released.
Perhaps there should be some changes to separate things like possession from negligent vehicular injury.

You could read the article and figure it out for yourself. At no point does it say anything about being white.

Even so, the judge suspended 1 yr of 5...he served 37.5% of his sentence.
Whats LA state average? National average?

The crimes he plead guilty to were not crimes of violence under Louisiana law, so he didn't have to serve the minimum 85%.
Then this last year Louisiana passed new law accelerated release dates implemented in Louisiana's Criminal Justice Reinvestment Initiative.

Yeah, dude. I read the article, too.

Criminal justice reforms cut both ways.

What a fricking fraud on the public. The Judges and DA’s know that the public wants real sentences for crimes so they convict and sentence for meaningful years but then they reduce that number behind the scenes to satisfy the defense attorneys who won’t plead out without low numbers.

Rizzuto pleaded guilty to 11 felony counts of first-degree negligent vehicular injury.
Why wouldn’t he be charged for every person that was injured?
