I'm sure there will be several posters coming along soon to tell you how much Texas sucks compares to Louisiana.

Louisiana has the same resources as Texas.
Not sure if serious.....
LA and Texas went on separate paths 100 years ago. One protected it’s future (oil money invested in universities) and diversified its economy. The other rested on its laurels and gave handouts to their buddies.

This doesn’t address the fact that they have the same resources. You just said they used the money gained from those differently.

100 years ago they had the same resources. Now the amount of capital in Texas is drastically different. The education is drastically different. The influx of population is drastically different. The only way “resources” could be interpreted as being the same is natural resources I guess but that’s a very limited thing he didn’t specify
Posted on 6/14/18 at 9:20 am to Adam Banks
Nobody is saying otherwise.
The states have similar natural resources. One is managed completely different than the other.

quote:Based on the most recent data I could find (15-16) Texas has 1026 regular public school districts, slightly behind California's 1058 (fewer schools per capita) 167 more than 3rd.
Texas has more top 100 public schools than any other state.
Public School Agencies
And not surprisingly of also has the 2nd most public schools by level, and again, nowhere is close to them or California.
Public elementary and secondary schools
So basically of that weren't in at least 2nd place, then that would be a bad sign for the state's education system. But they are one place above, so that's good for them.
Regardless, it's not that useful to look at the proportion of the top 100 schools, when there 24,000 secondary schools alone, and Texas has 51 times the number of schools as a state like Delaware.

Came here to say this...this isn't a per capita thing...it's a sheer size thing.

Yes, but it also depends on where you look. North Texas suburbs have a lot of incredible schools. But then Texas is only 37th in the nation in education according to US News. 33rd for Pre K to 12.
The good schools are really good, but there’s obviously a lot of horrendous ones to bring down the avaerage.
For example... Dekaney High School here in the Houston area. They have all the resources they need and more. Yet the students just suck. 98% minority enrollment, 63% economically disadvantaged, bad test scores.
Look at the school though:

The building is incredible for a high school. They have all of the best resources, good teachers, etc. Everything you would need as a student to succeed. Yet it’s not a good school because the students suck.

I get what you’re saying, but I took his post to mean natural resources. Mainly oil. That made the entire state of Texas grow and thy had the foresight to create the PSL and pump their schools full of cash. Dallas got all the banks willing to fund the oil boom in Texas and Oklahoma. Houston obviously grew with oil companies headquartering there.

Wonder how many of those teachers are from Louisiana...
Good teachers don’t make good schools, good students do

Texas is how big though? It's the size of about dozen states at once, kind of throws the math off. And I even went to a public high school there myself

True, which again is dependent on the area.

EBR spends $10,755.00 per student
Zachary $9,780.00 per student
Katy ISD $8,596.00 per student.
Cy_Fair spends $7,967.00 per student.
I can tell you that Cy-Fair is building 4-5 new schools every year and constantly upgrading.
Starting teacher salary in Cy-Fair ISD is $53K with BS. EBR $44,500.00 with a BA degree,$48,400.00 with a PHD.
One has to wonder what EBR is spending their money on.
These schools are amazing. People often think they are on par with Louisiana suburb schools like central, Prarieville, etc... Which is simply not the case.
Please note only 2.6% of the school aged population attends private school in Houston, Austin, and San Antonio. It's over 25% for Baton Rouge and New Orleans. That tells you all you need to know.
Please note: yes higher property taxes which go to fund these amazing schools. But residents aren't paying state income tax either so it's a wash. Send your kid to a fantastic public school or spend 10K to a private school in Louisiana.

I think it's combination both and you can throw in parent involvement while we are at it.

Parent involvement makes good students so it’s covered

Yes, the ISD system is the GOAT governing system. Louisiana should've gone to that decades ago.
The top 2 school districts on the state are The only 2 ISDs. It allows communities to take over the schools. It’s the way schools and communities were designed to be run. These huge, parish run districts were never meant to be.

It is the ISD model where the districts are run independently of the city government. I mean just look at BR.
The school system in BR is separate from local government too.
