Tethered Aerostat Radar Balloon on Hwy 90

Anyone else remember this thing? It was south of Hwy 90 between Jeanerette and Baldwin. It's been gone many years now I guess. Maybe a victim if the 2005 hurricanes. Did anyone ever work the site? Thing always looked odd flying out in the middle of sugar cane fields.

It was releasing chemicals in an experiment to control us
Drive through Jeanerette and you will see that it worked

The cable wasn't that easy to see. I wonder how many UFO calls were made over it.

Used for drug interdiction?

Yes seems it was the main purpose. The site actually looks like the USS enterprise from Google Earth view.

They were probably able to shut down Morgan City after Barry Seal went out of business.

I started to say the same thing.

Yes, I used to be able to see it from my backyard.

Man, that is fascinating...I used to see it, but never had any idea what it was.

That ballon was operational from 1992 - 2002.

Any idea what they're doing with the old site now?

The ballon had a diesel generator and 100 gallons of fuel. Could run for 4 days (100 hours ). Probaly a 12 kw or so. Gen set and radar weighed about 2000 pounds.

The cable was capable of going up to at least 18,000 feet and maybe 22,000 feet on some of them. They were marked on aviation charts, but there was no warning lights or beacon on the them. The cable on one of them in the Florida Keys took out a Cessna.

I was quite close to this site on one strange Spring day - a lifetime ago.

There’s a 355 page PDF file of a study about returning the site to the landowner. Trying to figure how to link it.

All of them but one were for downward looking radar to spot low flying planes coming in over the Gulf of Mexico and the western border area. One of the two in the Florida Keys is used for TV broadcasting beamed at Cuba, Anti Castro, communism type stuff probably funded by the CIA.

One broke away several years ago up in the NE. VA I think. Was supposed to be “impossible” for it to get loose. Thing was drifting along dragging the cable and tore up all kinds of private property and power lines. A resourceful Sheriffs Deputy got up on the side of a big hill and when the balloon drifted by he shot it down with a shotgun. That has to be a hell of a story to tell at the bar. “So there was this giant balloon...”
LINK to incident. The article only says they don’t know how it came back down but some people I talked to that lived up there said it was shot down. I guess that would fit the DoD explanation of it “running out of helium.”
