Tesla's autopilot helps Seattle Uber driver avoid a car crash

Hall uploaded a video to YouTube Wednesday showing the quick save. Dashcam footage, shows Hall driving down State Route 99 -- not far from downtown Seattle -- on a dark, rain-filled evening. Suddenly, an oncoming car makes an unexpected lefthand turn, speeding closely in front of Hall's car. Thanks to the autopilot technology of his Tesla Model S P85D, the vehicle immediately stopped, avoiding a collision.

If the car can sense, detect, and relay signals, then rest assured signals can be broadcast to the car and it can be hacked / controlled by an outside individual. Forget that.
They can keep all that auto pilot garbage. We just need to get the bad drivers off the road.
Plus, for all the drunks out there, you know you'd still get a DUI if the car was 'auto pilot'. So, this stuff isn't the panacea some hope it will be.

The uber guy violated a big safety rule - if you are speeding past a line of cars you really need to slow down because someone may not see you doing this. Posted speed limits are often dumb but don't go much faster than the traffic around you.
Technology might have saved his arse but he did not have to put himself in that situation.

I rented a new Suburban when my car was in the shop last month to spite USAA because they wouldn't pay for an OEM windshield for a 9 year old car. It had every bell and whistle short of physically controlling the car. It would flash red on the HUD and shake the shite out of the seat if I was approaching a car too fast, tighten the wheel and flash the mirrors if a car was pulling alongside and I turned on my signal to change lanes, interfere with the radio for random weather alerts, and a bunch of other shite. I honestly think it'll prove to be too much sensory input for your average soccer mom and will have the opposite of the desired effect. My bigger fear is that someone (probably a chick) will get used to all that shite and then borrow a car without it and end up killing somebody while she's texting.
I know you can't stop the future, but at some point we should always be looking at technological advances just a bit more roundly. And we aren't even to the point of considering the wide utilization of anything resembling true AI. We need to intersperse more "should we" among our "can we."
