Technically, you aren’t driving. How could you get a DUI?

People don't really understand how close we are to fully autonomous vehicles. We are 10 years out from driving becoming a thing of the past

Exactly, will the autonomous taxis/Ubers not be able to pick someone up from a bar?

For cars...there will almost always be some need for manual control of trucks.

Exactly. Some municipalities are going to lose a lot of money because of this.

Not only DWI's, but also asset forfeiture and drug convictions. Thats an assload of money that will be lost due to fewer traffic stops and subsequent car searches.

How do you establish reasonable suspicion to detain someone at a traffic stop if it is a computer driving?

I don't get the appeal of this automated driving stuff. I also don't think I could ever trust it. Maybe in the year 2300.

I don't care for automated transportation systems that don't have a way for the "driver" to recover if the system fails. 75 down the interstate and there is a system failure and you have no steering wheel!

In 3 more years after that introduction, Tesla will announce the cessation of the car with no steering wheel program.

As a more "seasoned" American (yeah, I'm old buddy, wanna fight about it?), I have watched this technology emerge with a great amount of trepidation. I mean, Terminator, Maximum Overdrive, the whole megillah.

However, as I have also witnessed a complete collapse in both the driving ability and the "giving a shite" about driving their multiple ton vehicles around me and mine of the average American driver over the past 35 years (and really accelerating over the past 10 to 12), I now welcome the opportunity to share the road with alert, attentive, capable robot drivers and even if the thing malfunctions and kills me, at least it was trying to drive and not updating its facebook status or retweeting that dank meme at 85 miles an hour, oblivious of the world around it.

I mean, I'm dead either way but I'm far more okay with the former than the latter.

This would actually be perfect for congested metro areas such as NYC, BOS, Washington DC

Having a fully autonomous traffic system would eliminate drive times significantly

It could go crazy with errors and still drive better than Asians and women.

I wonder that too. How would it handle State Street , Bocage in Algiers or Canal Blvd past R.E. Lee?

Is the car going to adjust for windy or heavy rain conditions or will you have to stop the car?

Will it evade if a tree falls in front of you? If a broken log breaks loose from the log truck in front of you?

What if there is a short circuit or fire when you are driving at high speed - do you just get a big thrill ride until it stops?

There are a lot of odd contingencies that can happen when you are driving.

I was driving a vintage Mercedes that had a steering wheel come off while I was driving. It was a thrilling ride, needless to say.

I feel the same way but it got me wondering how many steer by wire cars there are now and whether that is really any better.

Here is what I could quickly find

The global automotive steer-by-wire systems market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 23.4% over 2018 -2026
