i'll use small ones for your benefit.

dude became comfortable using a beta system and some legal language in a tesla owner's manual doesn't absolve them of any liability because dude 'should have known' in the split second this occurred that the system might pick up the car accelerating out of his lane and not the GIGANTIC PARKED VAN in front of him.

by tesla's own admission its beta and in my software development world we don't put beta software in the hands of production users.

You want to bet. You don't know what you are talking about.

Lovely sentence structure. I guess the small words distracted you.

The autopilot is in beta. This feature of the car is not in beta, is not unique to tesla, and did not have a "defect" in the way it is expected to act. Furthermore, the driver had control of the wheel and should have been controlling the vehicle to accelerate and merge into the next lane. He was not paying attention, despite the fact that this feature requires and reminds the user to have his hands on the wheel...for this type of situation.

Must have different definitions of split second. By the driver's own admission, the car warned him of a collision, but late.

What software development world is that?

every med/device online course we release?

we'd be in deep shite if we released a course detailing a new product that had incorrect information or the simulations were flawed.

In most software worlds, beta is usually a preview release with stated issues. It's the best way to obtain real data in production.

you think because gmail was released as 'beta' for years to everyone all software companies push beta products out that way...especially something that is pushing the accelerator on your car based on a computer algorithm?

I think it is actually a positive that we are hearing anecdotal examples of this. They are probably much safer than humans

Turn this same logic around on your own uses of beta. I can't comprehend what I posted for you.

I've already addressed this point. The autopilot feature is in Beta. The TACC feature, not something exclusive to tesla, is not in Beta

I've already said I can't comprehend it for you. Wasn't confusing.

Are you really arguing that Beta releases/testing aren't pretty commonly used in a production environment.

We're wrapping up a pretty extreme software release right now at a fortune 100 oil company. Guess where the Beta testing took place?

Testing with customers/users in real life environments is a pretty major reason for beta testing....

a select hand-picked group of your customers that you gave a clear set of caveats to and understand the risks that this isn't ready for general release yet?

at least i hope so.

So in production?

quote:

clear set of caveats to and understand the risks

Like this?

quote:

Warning: Traffic-aware cruise control may not brake/decelerate for stationary vehicles, especially in situations when you are driving over 50 mph (80 km/h) and a vehicle you are following moves out of your driving path and a stationary vehicle or object is in front of you instead. Always pay attention to the road ahead and stay prepared to take immediate corrective action. Depending on TrafficAware Cruise Control to avoid a collision can result in serious injury or death.

It is a public beta program, which isn't uncommon in the auto-industry. They went through a select user beta program before advancing it.

So they did exactly what you're saying they should do

Call me stupid but what's the point of autopilot if you have to monitor road conditions the whole time you're in the car.

They could program a Tesla to run over endangered animals and the Tesla apologists would still defend it.

What's crazy is that we will reject the implementation of this kind of technology based on accident rates which are far lower than the common driver. If people were held to the same standard as the technologies we permit to be implemented, then most drivers would be banned from the roads.

It's similar to the implementation of "shotspot" in tennis. The tennis community would not accept the technology until the margin of error and error rate were incredibly low. Comparatively, it was already much more accurate than the humans who regularly performed the job. (and yes, I realize that the result of an error calling a tennis ball in or out is much different that a car's error in reacting to a potential hazard)

The auto-pilot cars aren't there yet, yes, but how many grisly accidents happen with a licensed person behind the wheel? I'd say we're not "there yet" with human drivers, either

I don't own a vehicle capable of this, but would it wait to stop so close to the vehicle? So if 1000 other times the car stops like any normal person, why wouldn't he brake when he's getting close to the vehicle?

I don't know why you are so mad in this. It's the drivers fault, he had plenty of time to stop and he didn't. And was even warned this would happen.

Also I'd point out the human driver was in the van as well. If it was automated, maybe the van isn't stopped there to begin with. Going automated may not solve all issues, but the current system in place causes a lot of deaths annually. A lot.
