So I'm assuming that you are saying that one or two dead ones on the floor in the morning isn't cause for immediate concern? Especially with the huge swarms we seem to be having?

I'm not an expert, but from what I have read a few dead termites and/or dropped wings is not a sign of an infestation. Signs of infestation include:

1) a swarm inside your house,

2) mud tunnels going into your house

3)frass (termite droppings)

Correct. On those nights it looks like a biblical plague outside, you WILL find some dead ones inside the next morning. I've owned two houses with active termite contracts and it's happened at both houses this time of year every time. I've visited both a relative and a friend's house this past weekend, and both houses had dead swarmers in their bathrooms - both people keep their houses well-maintained. It just is what it is. Keep your house under contract just in case, but other than that, come to peace with having this invasion a few nights in May/June every year.

I've gotten used to this the past few years, but I don't remember this happening 20+ years ago. Is there some reason why it's worse now or did I just not notice back then?

Last night was the first night I noticed them in the Dutchtown area

Had a few in my house too from the vents. Scared the shite out of me as I’m trying to sell my house. I thought I had an infestation.

I would get them in my wood floors sometimes in my old house I guess there was enough moisture in the wood near the door to keep them happy. But they wouldn’t stay long. Had to pull a few boards up and replace.

Ever since we started going lights out many years ago at the first sign of swarms we’ve had minimal intrusion. Seems to always be some dummy in the neighborhood all lit up attracting the worst of it.

Feels the same way to me. I chalked it up to I just didn't really notice it as much when I was younger and it wasn't my house. Now that it's my house, I'm much more observant about things that could cost me money

But everybody I talk to all feel the same way about them getting worse. They're not native to our region. They likely found their way over on a container ship back in the 50s or something, don't remember exactly, from Southeast Asia. The humid, moist conditions here are perfect for them, and maybe they've been able to thrive since there wasn't an established predator in the food chain, i.e., anteaters, lizards, or whatever else eats them that exists in S.E. Asia but not here.

It’s definitely gotten worse on the Northshore since Katrina. I used to see some termite swarms during the day which I guess is the native subterranean termites. I don’t remember any termites around lights at all. I may be wrong but I think our area is slammed with formosan termites now

I turned my lights off last night and didnt see any dead ones this morning. Maybe a coincidence, but I wont be leaving my lights on overnight either way now.
