LC is what you make it. I love it. I'll move back one day. I'd be there now if I could.
Not a big city like NO or Houston. But has everything you need, tons of out door recreational stuff, solid schools, great baseball. Mcneese games are a good time!
We have a place on the river in Moss Bluff. It's may not be the Florida keys. But it's a great spot.

Tuff in the bluff, SHHS.. Lake Charles has, and always will be fools gold. The award for a parents job well done- kid goes to McNeese. Have higher standards if you are raising a family.

Having said all of that, if you’re a young couple without kids looking to have a good time in the town you live in and have lots of opportunities to shop/eat/run/golf/meet other couples without kids/etc I’d consider look into Lafayette metropolitan area. Fantastic healthcare, lots of activities and restaurants/bars, and everything Lake Charles has to offer and much more. But again if you have to move here, there are worse places. Happy to answer anymore questions baw
Appreciate it.
I don't want to clog up double posting thanking everyone for the answers, but I read every response.
Consensus seems to be that it's not the worst place to be, don't buy in a flood zone, seek out entertainment because it's there.

Depending on how competitive you want to be, look into Levee Breakers. The dude who heads it lives in Hathaway. He’s a baw, but a good baw.
Ran track for McNeese. Has a sub 4 minute mile under his belt and in the past has qualified for the Olympic Trials in the marathon.

You will fit in perfectly.

This is what I was looking for, thanks.
Bekery/Restaurant Calla area we like a lot.
The idea is to be there to start a family potentially. Some ties to the area, and I have siblings in Houston. I also like the idea of being close to Houston in the event of needing major medical care due to an illness.
so i live in this area, stout used to but i think moved since then
you will be in a good area, especially since the project near the mall got torn down. Its very easy access to both I-10 & 2-10 and you can get anywhere in the city quickly with lake st. once they connect sallier to nelson will be great
now you are in not great school districts. SJ Welsh is the middle school district and would be the best of the 3. can out of zone easy though and great location if looking for private school as ICCS and Queen of heaven are near by and are the best two schools in lc for elem/middle. THe magnet elementary ts cooley is also really good. EDS is too.
that area is close to down town. but I still think greywood is better overall area even though i live in the port/walnut grove area

Best Sports Bar? Or is it more of an area where most people are going to be at their families houses for games?
depends on what you like. OBs is good and has good seafood, Darrels as mentioned is good, coolers is good...couple others plus the usual like BWW etc

How safe would it be to run Shell Beach Dr and around downtown?
Are businesses slow to reinvest due to what happened with Laura/Delta?
How is the insurance situation?
Local Quirks?
as far as safety of the area, very good as i mentioned now that no more projects near the mall
as far as insurance, in that area you can get it pretty easy...south of 210 can get harry especially greywood area but it all depends.
running along shell beach and sallier area is perfectly fine and safe...again graywood would be better
i mean local quirks...people like to party and love mardi gras. If you have kids at a school like ICCS/OLQH you will make friends very easy
sports are big
McNeese basketball and baseball are fun, hopefully with new coaching staff football gets back how it was as its fun to go tailgate
if you want to email me lsu777td gmail i can help more if you want to keep off board

yea ill say...lafayette is better place to live imo. Better restaurants, more of them, more people but also traffic sucks too
but there are plenty of things to do in LC. plenty of festivals, great golf, good tennis, great fishing. got the wine festivals, the bourbon one, mardi gras, plenty of others too
easy drive to lafayette for there festivals, easy drive to BR or Houston as they are 2 hours, NOLA is 3.

Amazingly correct and astonishingly sad.
Avoid Lake Chuck, sorry folks who cotton to it.
actually no....the lake front and downtown has had and is having a huge revival with the port wonder, crying eagle being built and redoing of downtown.
hurricanes hurt but that area where the tower was will either be something really nice or nothing at all.

I didn’t realize there were bourbon and wine festivals. That is very cool.
my wife and I are both from Cenla, been to Lafayette many times and I know this is not the most popular take, but there’s something there I just don’t like all that much. Maybe our visits were ill timed, but it just doesn’t seem like the place for us.
LC, on the other hand, we’ve stayed in and enjoyed. What that says about us I’m not sure. We also have family there, probably makes a difference.

LC is a really good place to raise a family with lots of opportunity if you have a degree. You will find great people in the white collar scene despite what idiots on here say
the area where i live is great place to live as is greywood and other areas south of town.
if you plan to send your kids to private...not a better place to live than around where I live near the Port/Terra Saint/Walnut grove area.
if you want more specifics on the area, email me.

Truth. Family moved back after spending 10 years in Houston.... wish we would have moved back sooner. I love LC

Everyone jerks off Graywood but The Oaks is nicest neighborhood in Lake Charles because of location.
Grayood folks about to have to swallow some decreasing equity here shortly. Many houses for sale in there now with ridiculous sitting time. Overpriced housing is what I am getting at. I have a best friend who lives in there but he can, most of those people are stretching for looks. Its funny to watch.

i love the oaks but it is getting older for sure and location wise....both are great but my area is easier access to everything especially once the bridge is built connecting it to nelson
as far as equity...prolly and i dunno about people being stretched...im sure there are plenty all over. Most of my friends live in the bigger neighborhoods and are not stretched but i can imagine the smaller ones are like that
i will say that apartment complex being built by them has them pissed lol
but greywood is great because you have golf, the great club house, great exercise/pool, tennis, great outdoor activities, fishing in the ponds etc all on site. which is all better than the oaks
plus the oaks is older and land locked with hardly any new ones bieng built but it is better location than graywood imo. The areas east of town are all great too and building up really fast.
lots of great areas, just depends what you want. Moss Bluff has lots of great areas too. Westlake has the golf course etc etc

The Oaks is nice, but aging. The housing market in graywood isn't struggling... it's the smaller homes in Oleander that aren't moving because they are trying to price point them with some of the other neighborhoods. We love Graywood... my only complaint is that, yes, it isn't as convenient.

Good summary. I am looking forward to the Greenbelt Project which will connect the waterways namely Calcasieu River/English Bayou/Kayouche Coulee to Contraband Bayou. This loop will be over twenty miles.
I have mixed feelings with the Calcasieu River Bridge Project due to unforeseen construction issues, traffic, etc.

I don't know much about Shreveport, but Lafayette, BR, and Nola/the Northshore are all worse than LC in this respect.
My point being you're not likely to get away from the successful/white collar elitism in a third world state like LA.
