Wife’s car as well?

Don't listen to that nonsense. A listed driver is either rated or excluded from the entire policy. You can't cherry pick to exclude a driver from one vehicle, but not the other on the same policy.

Thoughts on donating the car my 18 year old uses to him then getting his own 15/30? Can this be done when he's still a resident of my house hold but off at school?

I figured it was a separate policy, because it would be moronic to charge the same driver twice because of the additional car if in the same household. Of course, it could be State Farm, so I guess it's possible.

What limits did you get? 15/30? Did you also get UM coverage?

From an insurance company standpoint, no reason why not. Put the car in his name only, let him get his own policy completely separate from you. List you and your wife as drivers on his policy too so, which should help his rates since a lot of companies would rate it as if each of yall were driving the vehicle 1/3 of the time.

I'd let one of the board attorneys chime in though on if he got into an accident, whether there would be any risk that you could still get dragged into a lawsuit in that situation since he's still a resident of your house, even though he's 18 already.

If you know for certain he won't be driving any cars on your policy, then you could exclude him on your insurance while he's still a resident of your house. But then he can't borrow your car if his is in the shop or anything.

Only downside of him being on his own policy is that he'll lose some of the discounts he'd have had on your policy....multi-car, multi-policy, homeowner, etc. Plus a lot of insurers use credit tiered rating and you probably have better credit than your 18 year old.

Sounds about right if you had a son it would be more expensive. I had three teenagers at once. Consider yourself lucky

We’ve paid Geico $280 per month for 3 vehicles for years and years. Zero accidents, tickets, or claims. My son got his license and they increased the monthly premium to $960 for the same coverage. I understand an increase, but $700?! We dropped them and went with Progressive-$368 per month with him listed as a driver.

Correct.

If she gets in wreck, she was borrowing your car. Add her after if they require
