TAMPA — It's official. Tampa now has an ordinance that effectively decriminalizes the possession misdemeanor amounts of marijuana.

Mayor Bob Buckhorn on Monday signed the ordinance approved by the City Council last week on a 5 to 1 vote, said spokeswoman Ashley Bauman.

Tampa police officers now have the option of imposing a civil fine instead of arresting offenders caught with up to 20 grams — or about ¾ of an ounce — of marijuana. Offenders could get a citation with fines starting at $75, rising to $150 for a second offense, $300 for a third and $450 for any offense after that.

I fully expect to see police officers with scales in their cars to properly determine justice.

It's Florida. The cops there have been pros at eyeballing it for years.

I doubt many officers even mess with it since there is no rap penalty after this. It wouldn't be worth anyone's time

I'll tell you one anecdotal experience - my brother was popped with an ounce of pot fairly recently. Although he went off to jail for an overnighter, the DA here in Houston has a first time offender program where you perform community service for a few hours and stay on probation. If you are successful, then it gets off your record. Clean.

My brother is a good dude, a college business school graduate who made a poor decision. Would've f'ed him up royally had the conviction stood.

Tampa, New Orleans... The south is finally going green!

Hopefully these will start becoming available soon

But once decriminalization comes, legalization isn't far behind.

He shouldn't have at all. Harris County decriminalized in 2015 for up to 2 oz. It still is at the officer's discretion though.

Yeah, an ounce is officially the felony mark.

Cheech and Chong were funny, but had a huge negative effect on stereotyping pot smokers. People would be shocked by how many respectable professionals enjoy smoking.

And a tip for your brother. Always smoke a bowl with your hookup. That way, it's at 27.9 grams, which is a misdemeanor everywhere except Florida.

I'd still be scared with what I brought with me when I was working in Texas. I think I had about 5 ozs of flower, and 7-8 grams of hash. It was a case of the worst paranoia that lasted 5 months straight.

No doubt.

I have no idea if he still does it TBH. Probably does considering the company he keeps.

A family member of mine who owns one of Houston's top 10 oil companies tokes quite often.

If he's buying an ounce, but has a decent job, he's definitely a smoker. I use to always buy ounces, just for the price break. Hell, I still buy ounces if I find a good coupon in a magazine.

Landrieu has already said he has every intention of signing the NOLA ordinance as well.
