Flying from Barbados to Miami once. Had an engine smoke and make a loud bang noise. I have never seen a plane that big get down that quick for an emergency landing. It was the most agressive decent I have ever been on.

Thankful for good flying

Reading this as I look at booking a cross-Pacific flight for trip to New Zealand.

Wtf would happen if this happened on a Pacific flight? Lost II?

Most of the oceanic flights have the ability to fly on one engine for what's called ETOPS 330, or 5 and a half hours. You're good

Logically, this should make people less afraid of flying. Things like this almost never happen, and when they do, it almost always ends fine.

I know it won't, though.

Just so you know, airline pilots are heavily trained to fly with only one engine. Most likely the plane will be under complete control and land at the nearest airport if it does happen.

I'm In Wichita for training right now and we do it non-stop, it is almost a non-event in the sim but you never know what's going to happen in flight if it comes apart like this one did. They are lucky the debris didn't take out some flight controls or other systems, that along with the engine issue would've made it a scary situation. Read up on the Sioux city crash if you want to see how bad it can get.

Like the horizontal stabilizer? Bad news

Think I saw another pic where it got hit with a little debris as well

Props to the person who took that pic. They had a pretty damn steady hand at the time.

Planes are able to operate safely with only one engine but they can't operate if the plane is badly damaged. It sounds like the plane had some significant damage to the wing and stabilizer. Which is a huge deal.

I think the worst crash for me was that flight out of (I believe) Omaha on a commercial twin engine that was too heavy in the back and on take off the weight shifted to the back and the plane sorta flipped upside down. When the audio recording from the black box was played, just before the crash, you could hear this young girl plead, "Daddy!"

I was on a flight once where we lost an engine. Had they not told us, we never would have known.

Granted, by lost I mean it stopped working, it didn't rip apart like this one.

My son-in-law's twin brother and his family were on that flight. They said it was terrifying before they landed in Pensacola. Needless to say they "drove a car" to Disney world.

Some of the most ignorant people I know are scared to fly and say it's not as safe as driving.

Update. Just talked to my daughter, SW reimbursed their tickets and gave $500 vouchers as well. I wonder if they paid for the rental car as well.. Forgot to ask.
