Suggestions for the 4th in New Orleans?

So.. I'm flying in to meet some old college friends in New Orleans for am extended 4th Weekend, any suggestions, I've been to New Orleans a decent amount but never on the 4th.

I've been to NOLA during Essence plenty of times.
It's MUCH safer than the Bayou Classic weekend.
If you go on Bourbon, stay clear of the Canal Street end, and party closer to the gay end of Bourbon.
If you watch fireworks, watch them near Jax Brewery or near Jackson Square.
Avoid going near the Morial Convention Center.
Most Essence Fest attendees are from out of town.
I've NEVER had a problem while in the Quarter during Essence.
Bayou Classic - bunch of Lil' Wayne clones with dreadlocks
Essence Fest - bunch of Jesse Jackson clones wearing khakis
