Egypt won’t release the massive container ship that blocked the Suez Canal for nearly a week in March until its owners agree to pay as much as 1 billion dollars in compensation

quote:

“The minute they agree to compensation, the vessel will be allowed to move.”

quote:

Egypt would demand $1 billion for the cost of the operation to free the ship, the loss of transit fees—an important source of foreign currency for Egypt—and other costs from the blocking of the canal, which caused a traffic jam of more than 400 ships on either side of the channel.

What's interesting is that even after they reviewed the ships black box data they allegedly couldn't determine the cause of it. Even though they said when it first happened that the ship lost power, which would be captured by the black box (again, allegedly).

What about the 20,000 containers of cargo on the ship? What are those worth?

If they average $50k per container you have 1 billion in cargo

One of my buddies is a merchant marine and went through the canal last week. I was surprised when he said it’s still there. Here’s where it was dug out of the sand
