MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - A new report shows that the well-being of Alabama's children has failed to keep pace with the rest of the country. The report released Monday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation ranks Alabama 44th in the nation in the quality of life it provides for its children.

The annual ranking measures states on 16 indicators from 2017 data covering topics like health, education and economic well-being. Alabama stayed the same or improved in all indicators, but its ranking still dropped because other states improved at a faster pace.

New Hampshire and Massachusetts received this year's top rankings. Louisiana and New Mexico are the lowest-ranked states. Alabama showed the most progress in the education domain. It made small improvements in graduation rates and math and reading proficiency.

The only good thing about Louisiana is Cajun food and the good people that post on these forums. All three of you.

These are not state issues. These are all based on family (or lack of) issues.

It's not up to the state to make sure Brayden or Jaquarius goes to school and puts up the effort. The state's only responsibility is to provide an education, of what they all do.

You'll find demographics play the biggest part

The legislature and the dept of Ed beg to differ.

I completely agree, but Mississippi, Alabama, and Arkansas are doing a better job with their Brayden and Jaquarius’s than we are. I don’t expect is to compete with Massachusetts due to our demographics, but we have no excuses for not beating out the three aforementioned states.

Seriously, what do you suggest be done? What is it that Massachusetts does that states in the south do not? I don't think they send out the Massachusetts National Guard out every morning through all the neighborhoods to make sure Little Johnny goes to school. They don't have better transportation to get there. Sure, the schools themselves may have some better facilities, but people don't drop out due to "facilities". Are the teachers really that much better? Maybe. But I doubt teachers across the country vary too wildly on commitment and effort.
It's the families. If your Mom (and if you have a Dad) didn't graduate from high school, and don't generally give a shite about your education, then what do you think your odds are?

Louisiana does not have an equivalent to NW Arkansas.

Since that is about a quarter of Arkansas' population there you go.

Louisiana will never rank high on these lists but we should be competitive with Alabama, Arkansas, South Carolina etc. This state is controlled by corrupt idiots.
