I love how the OT conservatives think every 17-18 year old kid should completely understand what they're doing when they sign up for student loans.
They're kids, they're idiots. They've been lied to their entire lives and told how they'll never be anything without a college education. No one ever tells them the full picture. And even if they did, they're still kids. Our entire system is absolutely idiotic.
How about parents? Let me guess, your parents were fricking idiots. It's a generational thing in your family.
There are a ton of student loan counseling options out there and they are every school. It is not on me the taxpayer, if the mouth-breathers like you don't utilize the services.

I’m sorry but whose parents didn’t sign every single thing when you started college? We didn’t know what those forms were lmao
I filled out the FAFSA on my own and told my parents where to sign. I just didn't give a shite about what I was signing up for, I just figured it was what everyone did to go to college.
I paid off my loans in the 10 years.

They are, but they bake the interest in so there is no advantage for paying them off early.
Sure there is. When you make a payment one month, your accrued interest is zero and it goes up for the next month's payment. If you've got it, you can make another payment the same day and it all goes to the principal. You can even do bi weekly payments that pay a little more towards the principal with a little less interest because the interest percent hasn't matured all the way before the end of your monthly cycle.

An accountant getting a masters to take the CPA shouldn't be given the same as a person getting a masters in library science.
The masters in library science would have to take a certain amount of accounting, finance, and economics classes on top of their own curriculum to qualify to sit for the CPA.
I think you misunderstood. The person getting their masters in accounting has a lot higher earning potential than the person going to be a librarian, thus it makes more sense they can take out more student loans.

Why do so many seem to understand it and pay back their loans?
According to this board they don't. So which is it?

Let’s see, you get out of high school, you can’t get a loan for a $350,000 house. But you can get a $350,000 student loan. See how this works.
Want to tell us your major?
Exactly why I'm advocating for underwriting of student loans. There are plenty of known criteria for evaluating potential students as qualified borrowers. Instead, we allow passing out student loans to any who wants it. Again, I'll point to how that worked out with the mortgage crisis.

It shouldn't be any different from any other type of loan. They want to have their cake and eat it too.

You were lucky enough to have parents who could explain this to you. We have a lot of reallllly dumb people walking around, and their offspring now "need" to go to college.
The average 18 year old has a rudimentary understanding of money, and they certainly can't comprehend BIG money. Looking at a debt of $150k doesn't seem bad because when they graduate they'll have a "real" job.
The biggest problem is that the government needs to get itself out of student loans. The guaranteed backing does nothing but drive up tuition to ridiculous amounts. Our entire education system here is jacked.
U.S. Gov: You shall read The Canterbury Tales and Poe with your free high school education! Liberal arts for everyone!
also U.S. Gov: If you want to learn a marketable job skill, we will offer you predatory loans while simultaneously shipping trillions in tax dollars overseas!

I'm talking about how to move forward with new student loans; currently, students loans are different than any other type of loan in that the lending standards are not very stringent.
For the mess these borrowers are in now, yes, they need to pay them back.

As I've said already, it isn't so much the giving of loans, it's the low standards of lending that's allowing for far too many loans being given out and, therefore, raising the price of tuition.
As for high school, yeah, I read that stuff, but I also learned useful stuff like Algebra, Calculus, writing composition and proper grammar. K-12 was always supposed to be about baseline education in reading, writing, and math. Then you go get a skill. Entry level job, apprenticeship, trade school and technician school are all options other than college.
