What's the reason behind the storm gaining speed after Thursday?

I lived there in the 1990's. We were told @ that time Fidel's mountains (where you see and smell the sugar cane always burning) would protect us. They were so sure of this they never had ANY contingency plans. I was evaced from there during the POTUS WJC Haitian crisis. (The Cubans/Haitians rioted and attacked base firetrucks) We had ONE HOUR to pack a bag and give a CONUS address; and left on a huge Cargo plane.

Over past where Navy Lodge is there are OLD as dirt bunkers and I am sure plenty -neither you nor I should speak of.-I suppose big ears hill would be a mudslide. Is WT Sampson new or still the old building? I know GTMO got a cane hit years ago and that freaked everyone out. It was maybe a 2? What you are living is unprecedented so think of yourself first. Does WT Sampson have a basement? Underground from tornados is a thought but the flooding may be bad.

My dad was at GITMO when Marilyn hit in 1995. He has some pics of the flooding IIRC.

He also has some aftermath pics of dealing with prisoners.

Also saw Gloria Estefan in concert there

That is pretty cool angelle, I know where you are talking about. As for the bunkers that was plan #1, but...and I shite you not...apparently they can't find the keys to unlock them and even then they haven't been opened in years so they don't know what the hell would be in there anyway...so that idea got scrubbed.

They are dropping water and MREs off in a couple hours and we are bunkering down in the housing. I guess it is just as good as anywhere else, not going to head to the school or gym anymore

LINK

I know. I posted that link. Those people are wives, pets, kids of the Active Duty, civilian contractors that live there. Dependents. GTMO is like any very small town America. Real people live there outside of the terrorist prisoners.

No one will ever know where or if the prisoners were evaced or where to. We can guess but it is not to be spoken of is the nicest way I can put it.

If I were you I would go to the older base houses. The Cinder block ones with the mirrored windows. (Yellow and pink and green houses) I lived in one for years it was called Nob Hill. The houses shook the Marines blasts-VERY BIG TIME- all the time. We were told that Nob Hill was on a fault line and too close to NEGate. We moved to caribbean circle. You would be much safer in the older homes.

LOL at them not knowing where the keys are to bunkers I BELIEVE IT and with this comment I have NO DOUBT you are @ GTMO now

Please stay safe and seek the older homes and put wood up on all the windows and get in fast.

Hurricane Inez in 1966 was the last time a cat 2 or higher tracked within 60 miles of Gitmo. Hopefully Matthew stays far enough east. Stay safe.

The greater Baton Rouge area went through hell last month with all the flooding. BUT what Hati is getting ready to go through is just beyond horrible. I don't really care about Cuba but they are humans and will go through the same hell.

yeah crazy thing is I have been here about a week, the fracking rotator had an engine go out on the way down last weekend and now this...frick my luck. I am in windward loop, they are older houses, but the windows are pretty big. Nothing to board up with so we will just head to the interior rooms when it gets rough.

I heard a few beaches (Kittery) were wiped out-- erosion.

Re: Gloria Estefan. When I was there we tried to get her; and rumors were she said no and wanted WAY too much money. (a couple mil) Since then I have always thought of her as a bitch for not doing an MWR show for free.

Yeah I know Kittery is closed, the only time you can get to it is during the marine fence run, which was supposed to be yesterday but was cancelled because of this...

It will be about 10000xs worse and not even in the same universe as to what La experienced.

windward loop looks JUST like my old house caribbean circle.

what you should look for to stay in, the pink, yellow or green mirrored windowed older homes made of cinder block

seeing that this is projected to dump at least 25" of rain on Haiti and some parts could get nearing double that if it's slow moving.

Looks like another honey pot for the Clintons is coming.

Consider the source. Haiti and Cuba are saved!

We aren't allowed to waterboard terrorists any more, but if Mother Nature decides to do it for us, oh well.
