re: Stolen Freon - real or scam?

In the 90's, this was a real thing. One of my degenerate friends in high school was an expert in stealing it, he'd store it in a garbage bag that would fill up and act like a balloon, sort of bouncing around. He would charge money for people to huff it, I was fine with dirt weed and beer, so I never partook. I did have to shut him down though, when he started stealing from my neighborhood. And if anyone is wondering, he is one of the few degenerates that actually turned his shite around and has made a great life for himself.

and the only way to come about it is to buy from an A/C man who captured some when replacing units for other people.
I know one guy locally sitting on a Fort Knox of virgin R-12. He and his dad invested a huge amount of money buying white bottles before the ban hit. He keeps the systems in my rentals topped off. The last I bought was the end of last summer and he charged $80 per. I don't know how much he has left but about 2 years ago I dropped by his shop to pay him and marvelled at the unopened boxes with R-12 tanks in them and at the time he still had over 1,000 pounds left. His dad wasn't in HVAC but he convinced his dad to put up most of the money and they cornered the local market.

You still have units with R12? They have to be ancient.
My A/C man said that eventually it will get to where R-22 will be deadweight and R410A will be hard to come by in 10-15 years. I imagine R-12 is deadweight now, considering how long ago it was phased out.

Yep, and they keep running because they can be repaired fairly cheaply. We have 3 in SC/NC and 2 in Broadmoor. I rarely see the HVAC guy in BR just talk on the phone but I assume he is using recovered refrigerant.

Or propane. Many degenerates in the HVAC world have knowingly used that in home a/c systems. Also many fires / explosions due to it.

Scam because R22 is way less expensive than that, like 1/5 the that price
In 2001 when I had an office at Dow Chemical in Plaquemines, two rail tank cars of R12 being shipped from there to Freeport, TX went missing. Suspected to have ended up in Mexico. Mechanical chillers using R12 were definitely still around.
In the early 1993 I sold two ethane storage tanks to a CA company, Pacific Scientific which was making Halon out of R11 and R12. They were buying up all they could.

Was on senior trip. Went to the “cool” kids place to see what they were doing since our group was bored that evening. Entered the place and saw all these freon cans on the ground. I asked what’s this about. Was told they huff freon for a high. At that instant I realized that all the “cool” kids weren’t so “cool” anymore to me and that who your friends were said a lot about you.

I could see it. Most Ac’s aren’t behind a fence or anything, recovery machines can easily be powered by a Jackery battery and a Chinese recover kits cost less than $300. The valve to hook up too is right at your outside unit. Could easily steal 3 30lbs tanks worth of refrigerant in less than 2 hours. You could build a portable setup in backpack form, and the big units can easily cover you from being seen, you can easily hide behind them. Kneel behind it, tap in, flip a switch, and just wait 15 minutes.

Put a lot of thought into this huh? Takes a thief to catch a thief.

One of my teacher’s kids died doing that in the late 80s / early 90s.
Turns out huffing Freon then going to dive into the pool is a really bad combination.
Uh-oh - think I knew this guy.

Naaa, I just work on AC’s and thought about this while taking my morning dump; how how one of the most expensive residential appliances just sit outside, in the open for any copper/freon thief to have free reign at if they choose.

Oh yeah, happened to me about 10 years ago at my office building. The bastards even cut the lines when they did it.
3k sounds out there, but Freon is getting harder to get and more and more expensive to come by. Maybe ask about a conversion kit that will let you run the newer stuff on an older unit

Kids and addicts cut the lines and huff the stuff. It’s what I’ve been told by HVAC people.
if anybody's doing that it would be the HVAC people, don't know why that bidness attracts so many crackhead derelicts but it does
