You're my favorite poster on TD, even when we don't agree. You seem like a good dude.

I appreciate your honest posts here. I feel better. Thanks.

Trazodone is not technically an SSRI because it's an old drug, but my doc put me on it for sleep after my divorce because I was depressed and could not sleep.

I still suck at sleep, but I can't sleep at all when I try to taper off. I still take a small dose (50 mg) because I need to sleep.

Trazodone is an SARI, it's closer to TCAs than SSRIs; I also use it for sleep. I can't sleep without it, but do deal with sedation the next morning as a side effect.

It also helps with depression & anxiety, in particular. What kind of problems are you still having with sleep? You can try a higher dose but you're going to want to watch out for sedation the next day. If you're having trouble falling asleep you could try (if you haven't already) combining it with Ambien, if you have trouble staying asleep you could look into adding Restoril.

If sleep problems persist or get worse, and you try, or have tried, upping the dose but can't use a higher dose due to sedation or it's not effective, then you can also look into a med called Doxepin, a tricyclic antidepressant, or Remeron, an atypical antidepressant. I've used both and personally found that Doxepin didn't help, although success with meds will vary from person to person, and Remeron can be very effective (and can also be very good for depression), but you'll want to watch out for weight gain as it will give you a serious case of the munchies.

50mg is not that much. Just go very slowly. Are the tablets scored? If so why not drop to 37.5mg per day for a few weeks then try the 25mg after that?

Good luck stepping down, just think though, at least you will finally be able to bust a nut in under an hour of trying.

It has gotten better but I've accepted that I'm now the "expert" on things instead of my mom. It's good that your parents are together as that will probably help them find their routine again once they're in their own home. Hang in there. First step is getting them back into a routine - house, job or hobby, etc. You might have to FORCE him to do whatever it is he loves to do but it's essential to finding his confidence and power again. And it's ok to sometimes secretly resent having to parent your parent. Just know that you'll one day cherish the experience of being in a position to help them when they needed it the most.

Thanks for posting this, it makes me feel better/hopeful. I really needed to read this today

slowly weened off of prozac because it was making me feel crazy. Once it was all out of my system I felt great for a few weeks, and then depression crept back up and has been here to stay.

Same boat.

I just kind of said eff it and quit taking it though.

Looking back it's scary but at the time I didn't really know wtf was going on.

I get what you are saying but weening off hardcore drugs takes nothing close to a month

Exercise can be a big help with your anxiety. Drink more water. Go out jogging. And watch what you eat.

It is not healthy to just lay around all day long, eat anything you can shove in your face, and watch hours of Netflix.

Drop by 12.5 mg per month if you aren't in a hurry. 50, 37.5, 25, 12.5.
