You just made a connection for me.

When I had my anxiety attacks they were approximately 6 months after Katrina. Maybe the fact that I lost a house and me and my wife were living in friends houses and hotels with a 9 month old and a 4 year old for 12 weeks and trying to hold down a good job was a factor.

I started with full dose for a week, half dose/full dose alternating for a week, half dose for a week, then half dose once every other day,

Doctor told me that if I started feeling too bad to go back up a step and try again. When it comes to SSRI's, everyone's body reacts differently, and in this case takes different times to ween.

A Doctor talked me into taking Effexor(sp) 15 yrs ago.Switched it to Remeron for 3 months and I stopped taking it.

I immediately had problems sleeping.Sleep 2 hours and wake up.Couldn't get a good nights sleep.

Tried Ambien,etc..Didn't work.

A different Doctor put me on Celexa 40 mg in the morning and I sleep fine.I've been taking it for close to 14 years.

The 1st Anti-Depressant I was put on seems to have re-wired my brain.

Surprised he put you on Zoloft. That is usually a female drug for their OCD. I am on a beta blocker, and it is great. More for heart rate and migraine's, but it is great for anxiety.

I have been telling him this and reminded him that so many had similar issues after Katrina. Luckily he freely admits to me now and that something is wrong and he is open to help.

I ordered a bunch of books/workbooks on anxiety off Amazon that have lots of exercises for my dad to do(writing out stuff, etc). Maybe if he could read about just how common anxiety disorders are and read actual about things to do to manage it...it will help. In addition to whatever his doctor suggests as well.

If anyone has a specific book that they recommend I'm open for suggestions as well.

I did it with lexapro a couple years back. Brain zaps were a bitch. It gets better with time, but be careful, it's no joke.

That was one of the best things for me. I meet with the guy for lunch one day a week and we just talk about whatever. It's nice to be able to be completely free talking about stuff.

It is indeed. Opening up with someone is great, but it still didn't allow me to control the constant panic I was feeling. I'm way better than I was before I started the meds again, but I've still got a lot of work to do. It's nice to know there are people out there dealing with similar issues tho. I like these threads

Benzos can give short-term relief for bad bouts of anxiety or panic, but I don't think they should ever be relied on as a long term solution. Maybe someone who suffers from situational anxiety, such as someone afraid to fly, could rely on them, but someone who has general anxiety shouldn't be so inclined.

I'm on Zoloft for anxiety and I will say that it has helped a lot. Took a good 12 weeks to start working consistently. I've been on it for a few months and I honestly just feel normal and I've noticed I'm more relaxed and don't dwell as long on things that would make me anxious. My doctor said that people will stop taking SSRIs when they feel back to normal, but that the anxiety/depression comes back harder after a few weeks. Best of luck to you

Do you think Celexa could also take this long to start working consistently? I think i'm halway through week 6 (started on 20mg for first week, 40mg since) and while i've had a couple good days sprinkled in, I'm still having being negative and getting slightly panicky at times.

Edit: sorry to hijack OP

Going from 50mg of Sertraline down to 25mg (as per doc for a month, then off altogether)

I went from 100mg down to 50mg for one week then down 25mg for another week and then off. I don't think I had any side effects, what would they be? I did this because my Dr. said Zoloft makes it very hard to lose weight and it really wasn't working for my social anxiety I started having roughly 2 years ago. My blood pressure meds have a beta blocker in them that helps some. He now has me on just the blood pressure med and colonipan as needed. I only take it when I know I'm going to be in crowds like shopping or football games.

I'm fairly level headed and don't get many sudden urges or attacks, if any. I use mine more for a detox, stress reliever.

You won't have to worry once they start putting SSRIs in the water.
