Walk around the walled area with your lawnmower running.
The vibrations will likely cause the snake to move elsewhere.
This is a good method to drive snakes out of wood piles, flowerbeds, etc. before working in those areas.
Good luck!
(If you seek help in the "outdoor" board you might get more helpful replies.)
Please don't try mothballs.
Even if you don't care about the toxins entering the soil and water supply you won't be able to enjoy being outside for months bc you'll be overwhelmed by the stench of mothballs.

Dump a box of mothballs into the hole...snakes hate the smell and will move on probably!

Do Mothballs Keep Snakes Away? No “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet!”, says Kathy Mayo, RN and Certified Specialist in Poison Information at the Blue Ridge Poison Center. “The use of mothballs as a snake repellent is an old wives’ tale that just won’t go away. When people sprinkle them under or around a house, it increases the likelihood that a child or a pet will find them and eat them. They look just like candy to young children. Also, the toxic vapors can seep up into the living spaces, sickening all of the people inside.”

A month ago my stepbrother got bit by a rattler. Got life flighted to Temple TX hospital. Evidently not all hospitals keep the antivenin because it is expensive. A couple of days in intensive care and a day or two in a regular room. Out of work for two weeks and still walking with a limp.
Rattlers are to be taken seriously for sure.

My suggestion is to either:
1) Attach a hose to the exhaust of your car and put it down the hole. You will kill anything living in the hole.
2) Pour gasoline in the hole and cover it so the fumes accumulate, pull off the cover and throw a match down there. The resulting percussion wave from the explosion will kill the snake in a humane way.

Longterm: Do you have an outdoor cat? If not, get one. Snakes shy away from areas patrolled by cats AND the cats eat mice/rats that attract snakes.
This.
I have an outside cat that is an absolute murderer. She has even ambushed gophers in my yard.
I have a 2 acre lot with woods on one side and I haven’t seen more than a grass snake in my yard in 10 years.

Edit if you do this wear a mask and gloves. Ingesting Lorsban can make you very ill or kill you. If you have outdoor pets don't use it
Well that should work good for him then he only has some small children-- no pets.

My neighbor has an outdoor cat that just sort of roams around. I love that damn cat. I've never seen a rodent remotely close to my yard.
My dog hates said cat though.

Bruh, was it a timber rattler?
They're protected. Called the wildlife authorities to come relocate it for free.

FWIW, CAD lives in my city and I've seen 2 Timber Rattlers up here in the last 7 or 8 years.
I go in the woods a lot hiking though. Haven't seen one near a lot of human activity.
frickin canebrakes will scare the shite out of you when you're on a pleasant hike after smoking a little pot. Chain reaction has been known to cause a pants pooping event.

No update yet. Been busy with other outdoor projects but have been keeping an eye on the area.
Yes i stepped on the damn thing and yes it's a rattlesnake and and started rattling and trying to curl up.
I have 3 dogs and a cat. One dog is very good at snake hunting but dumbass was off playing in the creek down the road when this happened.
I will post pics and maybe a video of the action if there is any later.
I used wasp killer because it was the only thing handy and it shoots a mile so I was trying to flush it out. Had I known there was an opening in the rock I would have found a truck or something rather than let it escape.
Yes I'm still freaked the hell out.

Maybe mothballs but I've heard they don't really repel snakes, just their food sources

I'm not scared of snakes in the slightest, but I don't go near canebrakes. You're on your own bub.
Those things can launch something like their entire body length.

The more southern ones have a much more prominent red stripe on them and a lighter color overall, they have these all the way down in Florida. I haven't seen one before.
This is most common look up in Tennessee, a little dark all around. Hard as shite to see at night:

Soak a rag in gas and stick in the gap the snake went in. Don't light it just let the fumes work through the wall. He will come out somewhere.
