Steers or strags?

It finally dawned on me that yesterday's "wi@@er/wi@@ah" is this generation's "hipster".
When "gangsta" was cool, people wanted to be a part so they started dressing similar, using urban "shizzle nizzling" dialect, and blaring rap songs.
Many have moved on to the next celebrated sub group with "gay marriage" being a hot topic so they started emulating the homosexual community. I just dont get where the name "hipster" came from, shouldnt we be saying "steer" or "strags" in the similar play of wi@@er? Maybe "strays"?
It seems unfair to emulate a style without paying some homage to its origin?
