Statue Controversy Spreading to Kentucky

The debate has spread into Kentucky. Even the politicians are arguing over what should happen. The two statues (John C. Breckenridge and John Hunt Morgan) are located in Lexington's Cheapside Park, one of the south's most prominent slave trading markets before and during the Civil War.
White nationalist groups are threatening to march on Lexington which could lead to more violent protests like those in Virginia last weekend.

quote:
Former Judge John Roberts said he wants the statue of John Breckinridge to stay where it is. He argues that Breckinridge was “more of a politician than anything”.
quote:
A local reverend told the council that the two statues “conspire to hide the horrors of slavery”. He supports the proposal to move the statues and “provide true history”.
quote:
“It’s just not right for us to continue to honor these Confederate men who fought to preserve slavery on the same ground that men, women and even children were once sold into a life of slavery,”
-Jim Gray, Mayor of Lexington
quote:
“If we don’t want to repeat the mistakes of our past, then we better teach it to our young people, It better be known. It doesn’t have to be celebrated, as in 'that this was something we did and we should do again.' It’s the wrong approach 'to pretend it didn’t happen, to remove from society' because where do you draw the line?”
-Matt Beavin, Governor of Kentucky

What exactly is false history concerning the statues? He doesn't want true history he wants one sided history.

Kentucky was a ****y arse boarder state that couldn't make up their mind on what side they wanted to fight on so they don't deserve to have the statues to start with.

Unfortunately, this was a losing battle nationally as soon as people started trying to argue they should remain based on the historical information of the men represented by them. Even when correct, that's just not an argument most people on either side of the argument are usually educated enough on to even have a real debate.
It should have always been argued as long standing historical artwork, and that's all. I'd have bet my left but 90% of NOLA' residents of all colors could not have told you jack or shite about Lee prior to the controversy and even after most of what they would have told you was only what they were repeating having read it on Facebook or Twitter. For most, Lee Circle was associated with Mardi Gras parades, not the civil War.
Now you've got white supremacists "defending" the monuments, and there is nowhere left to stand on the opposing side that does not link you to those frickers. Game over...

Agreed. Personally IDGAF what they do with the statues, but the fact that the majority of people have no clue what occurred during the Civil War is ridiculous. Slavery was abolished in the South before the North. Grant and Sherman owned slaves DURING THE CIVIL WAR. Sherman evened maintained his after the war was over.

I'm trying to figure out how statues are capable of "conspiring to hide the horrors of slavery”.

for frick's sake..Breckenridge was the youngest Vice President in United States history. These cock-wallets need to get a grip on their faux, media incited outrage.

Those assholes are as bad as Black Lives Matters over shite like this. Hopefully they can keep their asses home.
They're simply voting to move the statues to Veterans Park, where they'd still be honored as war veterans and a more appropriate place to do so. And they're voting to ask permission to move them from the Kentucky Military Heritage Commission.
That's how the movement of these statues should be handled.

The only statue I did care whether it remained or not. Robert E Lee was one hell of a general, and for his time extremely progressive in regards to Civil Rights and Liberties.

How can we get Saban's statue on this list?

Didn't you see Night At the Museum? Probably something like that.

To which part?
The abolishment of slavery was a condition of surrender for the South. Slavery wasn't fully abolished in the North until 1901.
Sherman and Grant had dozens of slaves each, many of whom would accompany them to the battlefield. Grant freed his in 1866, Sherman not until 1870.

Obama's and Eric Holder's goal of anarchy is flourishing. Church massacres and running crowds of people over. Great guys. But atleast we've removed flags and statues.

This is outright false. I'd suggest some quick googling or a visit to Snopes.
13th amendment was ratified in 1865, so the 1901 date is complete bullshite.

Delaware did not fully abolish slavery until 1901. There were as many as 1700 slaves in the state as late as 1890.

I don't give a shite about those statues. What I do care about is people wanting to get rid of statues because they somehow feel offended by them after 150 years, thinking that it'll somehow make people less racist. Those statues are there to remind us of the horrors of division in this country. Ironic to say the least.

Delaware did not ratify the 13th amendment until 1901. A state does not have to ratify an amendment for it to be enacted within the state. By that logic Mississippi allowed slavery until 1995.

Although I'm skeptical of the timing of it by Mayor Gray, I think it's being handled pretty well.
They've already been moved around a couple time to reinvent the area and it's currently being updated again to turn the historic courthouse into a visitors center with restaurants and a banquet hall. They just don't fit in the area anymore. The two most prominent suggestions I've seen so far are moving them to Veterans Park as part of a war memorial trail or to Lexington Cemetery to a part that commemorates Confederate soldiers buried there.
The only problem I see is that in a few years that won't be enough for the left and they'll start getting vandalized again.
