True, but your chance of death is astronomically higher in a aeronautical crash vs automobile crash.

Departing at 5am ain’t a red eye baw, going out to a rig?

Helicopters are flying all the time.. Its just that when one crashes it is a big news story. If fatal car wreck was to be reported like a fatal helicopter crash, that would be the only thing news outlets would be able to report on.

Still, it’s possible to do a little speculation with the data that are available. Between 2005 and 2009, there was an annual average of 1.44 fatalities (PDF) per 100,000 flying hours in nonmilitary helicopters. Over the same period, there were 13.2 traffic fatalities per 100,000 population in the United States annually. Since the average American spends around 780 hours per year (PDF) in the car, that means the fatality rate per 100,000 hours of driving time is just 0.017. Based on hours alone, helicopters are 85 times more dangerous than driving.

Right. In any crash your survival chances are dependent upon your ability to dissipate 1/2mV^2 away from you to 0.

If as many people flew as traveled by road would that still be true?

I don’t think I will ever get in a helicopter. I never really get worried flying in planes but I don’t trust helicopters.

This is my view. No doubt a automobile crash can be deadly but there is also a decent chance you will live through it, I have been in several in my lifetime.

If you are in a plane crash you are going to die unless you are one lucky SOB. I've only flown once in my life and it would suit me just fine if that turns out to be my last

It sure is, and here's why: once the plane hits the ground, technically you're not flying anymore. So, flying is 100% safe.
