Sen. Norby Chabert says that Uber and Lyft are coming to Houma/Thibodaux now.

Sen. Martiny of Kenner sounds like a little bitch bought by the cab companies.

Efforts to enact statewide Louisiana regulations for ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft, aimed at expanding the services' availability around the state, won passage Saturday in the Senate, after two years of stalling there.
Continued pressure from lawmakers in regions that don't have the transportation networks or widespread tax availability broke the logjam this session, with 34 senators supporting the legislation.
Supporters said 44 other states have statewide regulatory frameworks for Uber and Lyft and Louisiana was unnecessarily lagging behind, stifling transportation access that could lessen drunken driving, boost economic development and help the carless.

The measure by Rep. Tanner Magee, a Houma Republican, nears final passage, needing one more House vote to reach the governor's desk. But Senate passage was seen as the only roadblock to becoming law.

Only one senator, Republican Danny Martiny of Kenner, opposed the legislation, warning that the regulatory structure created in the measure was certain to face legal challenges. Martiny said Louisiana's constitution requires such services to fall under the Public Service Commission, not the state transportation department as the bill provides.
"I've said every year for three years, you get the regulation like the Public Service Commission regulates the cabs, and I'll co-sponsor the bill," Martiny said. "I just don't understand why they don't want to do this."

Martiny has a point. The PSC should be the agency to regulate them on a state-level.

Why does the government have to be involved at all?

Why? Why must they be regulated?

Because of their involvement in everything, LA is last in anything good.
FLORAL LICENSES - We’re the only state that requires a license to put damn flowers in a vase.
Our lawmakers are the reason we can’t be in the top half of any good measure of living.
Guess we are too stupid to know what’s good for us but smart enough to pick the people who do.

You know the answer. It’s because of public safety. Just like they have to regulate barbers to save you from a bad haircut. Life threatening stuff!

Frankly, I'm surprised that these services/apps proliferated across the country as they have.
I figured the Mafia, or whoever really runs the taxi services, would have clamped down on Uber, etc. before it ever got going.

Is this real? We are halfway through 2019 and Louisiana is just now getting around to legalizing Uber and Lyft???

Don’t they already have taxi regulations in the state?
Ubber and Lydt are just taxis with some pay day loan scam tossed in for good measure.

Without regulation, anyone could drive... people without a license, child molesters, addicts, people without insurance.
Yes I now Uber and Lyft have their own regulations, but in other cities they haven't been strict about screening drivers until public outcry or regulators got involved.

So because you have a prior (non vehicle related) felony you are not allowed to drive a vehicle?

Already illegal
Also, pretty sure you have to pass background checks and minimum qualifications to drive for uber

Yes, convenient and clean on-demand transportation service is a scam.
But inconvenient, inflexible oftentimes unfriendly taxi services that are protected by unions, lobbyist, and government regulations or else they’d go out of business is not?

No they can't. Uber and Lyft require this to drive.

Next up for Houma, Facebook and Amazon!

The Ubber Lift economics are the payday loan scam. The drivers are waking up to the wear and tear on their cars which is fine. Nobody is holding a gun to their heads to make them drive.
What irks me is that there is a regulatory framework (which I agree is crooked and bloated) but why does one particular company get to exempt themselves from it by simple declaration that they are not a taxi service? Whether I hold my hand up in the air or click on a phone it’s still a damn taxi for hire.

They sure tried in New Orleans

Uber lobbied for the bill, they drafted it, and found a Legislator to sponsor it.
