Wow, that’s a lot of work to get that started. I would think that once you get that started, you surely would want to keep it going all day without having to go through that process all over again.

It says in the comments they usually started with a crank handle. The shotgun start was for very cold mornings. Presumably once the engine was warm you could restart it the normal way.

shite this reminds me of getting old tractors started up with my dad. So so so many old John Deere’s. I can remember driving a Hi-Boy all the way from prairieville to Gonzales for a tractor show at 15 miles an hour.

I can remember taking all day and into the evening to get a rope-pull pony motor stated on a very old D-4 Cat. Was 30 below zero. Finally got the pony started. Kicked it in, and the diesel started right up. Left the diesel running all night long. Great old piece of machinery. Was a 1938 I think.

Young baw in the background looks like he's listening to an extremely boring story in hopes of getting some arse.

Fun fact: when hand cranking an engine, never wrap your thumb around the handle. If it kicks back it can break your arm.

Another fun fact: always stand in front of the handle to also avoid breaking your leg if it kicks back.

Cold start a 4020, twist the steering back and forth to make it turn over faster
