Is this useful technology?

It seems like hammering your starter that many times has to outweigh the very slight gas savings.

I'm sure they take the extra starts into account when designing the starter.

Not hammering starter. On these cars, the ECM knows the exact position of all of the cylinders, and can, and do, fire only the first cylinder to reach TDC. End result being, they run the starter less on those restarts.

Engine already up to temp, only takes 1/4 turn to fire off.

My cousin has one. It's definitely not like a cold start. It starts before you can move your foot from the brake to the gas pedal

Rented a BMW in Belgium a few weeks ago that shut off at traffic lights. It was different that's for sure. I was worried it wouldn't start back up.

have it on 2 cars. you can turn it off but it won't stay off. have to hit the button every time you get in the car. I don't like it. usually I forget and wind up hitting the button at the first stop sign.

When I was test driving new F150's I had the same concern. My worry was that in summer heat it would get hot then cycle on and off in traffic. With the heat here it was smart enough to never shut down, and maintain a/c. I guess in spring/winter it would perform differently.

This will be a fad. You have no control once it shuts off, your power steering goes away. To me it's counter-intuitive. The car only shuts off for so long until it starts back up again even if you don't lift your foot from the break. It's a waste and will only lead to more shite going wrong on the vehicle.

You're right. It's a gimmick to get the epa averages up for the fleet.

Subtle brag on being able to rent a vehicle because you are over the age of 27.

I have a rental now with this feature. Have to say I'm not a big fan. You still get a slight delay when taking off at a light.

One of my sisters had one. Total POS that stayed at the shop. After the fifth time, the bought it back from her. Car had less then 2K miles and they could never fix it.

My truck has it and it’s annoying. I turn it off every time I get in.

The newer starters are made different and don't have solenioids. The solenoid is what most commonly failed anyway. (The thing that shoots the gear into the flywheel, the motor then turns it)

It's required to meet new standards for lower idle emissions. Like it or not, it's going to become more prolific.

I rent a lot of cars, and I have yet to encounter a start/stop system that I liked. Maybe BMW and cadillac but only because they can be turned off.

I have to drive my boss around comes down we take his car places and I hate that shite. I “start” the engine but no rpm rev at all. I keep thinking that the car didn’t start.

My 435 has a switch to turn the feature off, permanently. I hated it. Engine would come on when I pushed the clutch in.

I do this too, but turning it off is usually preceded by,"Fricking stupid piece of shite fricking useless crap!!!! when it shuts off for the first time.
