It made the name less obviously German. After WW1, Germans weren't so well liked anymore. German as a spoken language in Louisiana disappeared virtually overnight and names were changed as Germans living here who really wanted to be American tried to assimilate more and become less German to avoid the backlash due to what was happening in Europe.

Ah That's good to know. I recall reading that it happened years ago(before the road obviously) but wasn't really sure why.

Wow. Isn't the old Staring Fish & Game Club Luxury Hotel?

Times have changed

My dad would talk about going out to Brians Lakeside Oaks down Perkins East(Old Perkins) just before Santa Maria on the right. It's still there now

But this was a happening place to go drink and hang out like a resort back in late 50's early 60's. Crazy to imagine that being an area of retreat or resort in the country.

If you want to find a place that doesnt flood, look for where the first settlements were in an area. Years ago we had a camp on the Ouachita River. There was an old, old homeplace just down from us that stayed high and dry even in the worst floods. You couldn't see the difference in elevation with the naked eye but the oldtimers knew what they were doing.

Another local example of this is the Historic Galvez Town, way down 42 just before Port Vicent. The Spanish settled there b/c it was less likely to flood from the Amite/Manchac. And you're right, it doesn't look like it's elevated to the naked eye. Galvez Town Gmaps Locations

Does it bother anyone that "Staring" is mispronounced? The way people say it, it should be spelled "Starring"

The family the road is named after pronounces the name like "Starring" baw

Yep...owner or owner's daughter was on Neighborhood app going medieval on people for wanting to clean it up. Got very ugly but comical.

And what the hell are they building next to it?

oh ok. well what about "highland?" some of these names just make no damn sense.

Highland road is located on the same Pleistocene terrace where LSU is located, hence high land road.

Right. About 50 responses before the mods took it down. I recall her and a buddy ganged up on a blonde and said her lips were nasty.
