According to my friend in the NOPD... All black males that are suspects in a crime should be treated as violent felons... Regardless of age

Roger don't you know a trooper? Is there a huge difference in salaries b/w them and city cops?

Yes, friend of mine is with the forensic unit of the AST. They make similar salary to the city cops and many get the same training. Starting pay in Ak is around 60k and 100k is possible for a long term officer.

I know it's a tv show but troopers seem to show tremendous constraint in high stress confrontations. I am impressed bc they probably deal with more armed people than anywhere else.

The AST is superb. I've had dealings on both sides of the law and only had one situation where I felt they were unprofessional. Cream of the crop IMO.

Juneau police were excellent at one time but had a lot of lateral transfers from Anchorage, where the PD is much more militarized. It's got worse around here, less community based policing IMO.

JPD is hiring. 60k right out of the academy. Pretty much just chasing drunks out of downtown.

I was hoping the pay would be much better for troopers. Those guys have balls.

Those guys have a lot of autonomy. It's a dream job for someone wants to be in law enforcement. You can be a trooper or wildlife. Wildlife troopers are our fish and game officers plus they do double duty at times with highway patrol.

Many are pilots.

Paid to drive around Alaska and round up drunks every once in awhile, sounds like a pretty sweet gig.

I was making 50k a year for two years driving around and giving people parking tickets right out of college.

Nope, both are under DPS. You go the academy and when you graduate, decide which side you want to work. Wildlife troopers wear a different shirt, get an F-150 instead of an expedition. We have a new one around town and she's kinda good looking...

They have two special units, aircraft and marine.

Yeah, it's pretty dangerous in the native village though. They don't like troopers. Two of the guys featured on the Nat.Geo show were killed earlier this year on the same arrest. The State isn't allowing any more shows to be produced.

Yeah, one of the "meter maids" with JPD made over 100k last year. I'd hate that job though.

Yep. I believe a film crew was there. Shortly afterward they suspended filming. It happened in Tanana, where another show "Yukon Men" was filmed.

One of the guys that was killed talked about the relationship he had with that village in one show.

I'm sure I've seen it. When I mentioned they had balls it was mainly attributed to how they handled themselves in those villages with no backup.

Yeah, I wouldn't like that. Villages have VPSO's who until the past couple months have historically not allowed to carry firearms, which is why they have to call in troopers so often. The village is a pretty hostile place for non natives in general. I've had the opportunity to teach school in the bush and declined.

Some of those officers cover an area the size of many States by themselves.
