And I have lived in the south my entire life and have never heard of someone mixing cough syrup with fruit punch to make purple drank. How would fruit juice even make it purple? Now if it was Sprite, Mountain Dew, or a bag of Jolly Ranchers on the counter, the purple drank thing would make sense

Correct - purple is b/c it started with grape soda. Vice had a good episode on it. They mix it with all kinds of stuff, but they standardized the name on "Purple".

Well, I'll concede this one as I've never seen blue/teal cough syrup. Codeine with Promethazine is usually already purple when I've had it prescribed. I've seen the color be pink too, but I've never heard of fruit juice going into it.
