WBRZ Story

quote:

BATON ROUGE - Leaders with the city of St. George are fighting the annexation of some properties, saying they don't meet the legal requirements to be absorbed back into Baton Rouge.

Documents filed this week by St. George leadership says the East Baton Rouge Metro Council's filing to annex a batch of properties in the area of United Plaza Boulevard off Essen Lane.

The legal requirements for annexation demand that any properties being annexed back into Baton Rouge must be contiguous with the boundary between the two cities. According to the filing, all but one of the seven properties, and the public road, do not meet those requirements.

The collective properties and businesses are said to be worth more than $9 million.

The petition goes on to call the annexation an attempt to "deprive the City of St. George of revenues" from those properties.

So St. George is now suing to force property owners to pay into their city even if they don't want to be apart of it. Interdasting.

Something changed their mind. The SG spokesman has been saying all along that any anyone who wanted to be in Baton Rouge rather than SG was free to go with their blessing. Just like anyone who wanted to leave Baton Rouge and be part of SG should be allowed to move.

I wonder what changed?

Checking in to say St George has no chance of ever being approved by voters or ever even making it onto a ballot.

St. George derives it's revenue from sales tax, not property tax. The businesses in United Plaza do not generate any sales tax

SG needs property taxes, too. Especially if their ultimate goal is an independent school system. School districts rely heavily on property taxes.

Front end.

These annexations get approved and StG wins incorporation, the annexations are voided but they'll have to fight it then.

They will still be able to petition to unincorporate and request annexation after.

Could just be a giant FU to the City-Parish for their lack of cooperation in the transition. The original petition set to be heard on 2/24, asks the court the establish the certification of the vote to November. This suit may also be just be them covering their bases.

Why would they be voided if property owners have followed the law to be annexed by BR?

See my post above. The original petition requests the vote be declared in November which is prior to the petition for annexation.

That’s possible.
