I'm saying a little help from the golfer can make a place better, and that a maintenance crew can't work magic

I replace divots and ball marks on the course as a courtesy to the other golfers. This thing with the range is asking me to help out the golf course. To that I say, no thanks. I'm not paying you so I work on your range's condition.

Not to mention a good range will have alternating tee box locations to allow for repair and regrowth.

Speaking of etiquette. I did 18 yesterday at a local club. Some lady and her 2 adult sons were riding the carts ON THE GREEN. I get that they are probably new (obviously, they were terrible). But the ranger never went around my entire round..... So do I say something to the woman in that case? I told the front desk after the round, but I don't know what good that did.

Asking you to do this is literally not asking you to lift a finger unless you just dump a bag of balls on the ground and hit them where they fall

So why would you not make linear divots as a courtesy to other golfers?

Linear divots:
1.) Increase surface area of "good" grass for others to hit off of
2.) Since grass grows across, linear divots are quicker to fill in than giant patches.
3.) Nobody wants to hit off of sandy grass with no roots. This is what happens when you hit balls at random and create sporadic divots.

If you don't want to make linear divots, that's fine. Just don't be bitching about the health and condition of a range since you refuse to do your part to help.

What it's asking me to do is take care of the course's driving range. Hey, why don't you also repair the range for us and we'll still charge you $8 for a bucket of balls and $50 for greens fees.

That's how I see it.

That's just it, doing this requires less effort on your part than fixing your ball marks. Literally all you have to do is move your next ball behind your last divot.

It actually requires less thought and effort than trying to find a good spot to hit the ball from too

You aren't repairing or "taking care of" anything. If anything it's preventative maintenance so that the grass grows back as quickly and as full as possible.

Well consider the OP the next golfer at that range behind you. He seems to be asking that you leave him a nice range to warm up or practice on. Wouldn't you be pissed to find a shitty range after you just paid $8 for the range balls you now have to hit off sand and dirt?

I'm with you on that. Scattered is unnecessary.

people who do not fix ball marks on the green should be summarily shot on spot ...

When you go the next month and the green fee is now 60 bucks because of increased maintenance costs, don't bitch

Good point about ball marks on the greens too. If you lift up on the divot tool, it breaks the roots and kills the grass…which takes twice as long to grow back. Stick your divot tool into the grass at the edge of the divot and give it a little twist. Do that all around the divot. Then give it a final tap or two with the bottom of your putter to flatten it out.

I actually just stick the tool in back of the hump it makes and push that into the void 3-4 times, then tap it

Losta inuendo there

You probably shouldn't play golf if you are complaining about prices or just have an utter lack of respect for other people, as well as all the facilities that encompass a golf course.

I actually reworded mine to avoid the same thing…you know…in honor of keeping things on track.

Anyway, that's the key…to use your words….stick the tool in the back of the hump and push to the center. Don't lift it.

Repair the range? Grass can only grow so fast man. I promise you they are doing what is financially feasible to "repair the grass" but Mother Nature doesn't always cooperate. You can't force it to grow back.

Linear is the way to hit on the range. Put the ball at the very point of grass and take a divot behind the ball. Those are 30 shots each. The USGA has no reason to lie.

Bermuda grows laterally and linear allows more stolons and rhizomes to spread and recover faster. Scattered isn't bad, just isn't as efficient as linear. Concentrated is just selfish and unnecessary.

Ballmarks should be repaired pushing forward. Do not pry up.

People love to complain about course and range condition without taking care of the course themselves. I take care of every course as it was my home course.

Great thread Thibby. I'm back to skiing.

If I could control my divots like that, I wouldn't have to drink so much.
