Tènis (teh niece) is how tennis is pronounced in French. Given the depth of the French roots here, that’s why you still have pronunciations that carry on.

I rarely wear my tinney shoes, but why is sneaker acceptable? Because they are rubber-soled and in the NE you can sneak up on someone, quietly?
