quote:This was Zappas Stache's reply to my quote of Wolfe.
he's hilarious, a super intelligent dude who has a way with words. He's basically made a career and etched his name in the list of American literary greats by destroying modern pretentions.
quote:And he denied he was pretentious.
Wolfe was a calculating reactionary who knew there was an uneducated audience for clever critiques of modernism.

FWIW, I saw a guy freehand paint numbers on a racecar and I thought that was pretty badass. Lines were perfectly straight, too.
That takes a lot of skill, so I appreciate their talent

I liken "modern" art, like Pollock's or any number of others' works, to modern Jazz or modern "classical" music.
The modern Jazz (fusion, bebop, whatever) and modern Classical genres all revolve around maybe 8 bars of a loose melody. When not in playing the "loose melody", instruments play whatever the frick they want, in whatever key they want, in whatever time signature they want, on whatever fricking planet they want. Rhythmns clash, chords clash, themes clash. While the trumpet is doing atonal runs, the bass may be in a different key, playing a third slower, and the brushes will be playing a tempo between the trumpet and the bass.
Just like Pollock, it's all mostly crap. Crap. Crap. Crap.

Always entertaining to read a thread where rednecks critique the work of Jackson Pollock.

Well then, two things:
1) the chimp is probably more skilled than you
2) you need to put that chimp to work making millions for you

These purchases are never driven by anything other than ego, and the fact that the paintings suck makes them that much more valuable for this purpose. It basically gives some rich frick the outlet to say, Look at me - I can wipe my arse with 500 million dollars."
No.
These "rich fricks" buy these and sell them for 30% more 5-10 years later.
There's usually a reason they are "rich fricks" in the first place.

There is also a belief it is a medium for laundering money.
Not so far fetched.
