Consider what health care costs companies now vs. when your dad had his benefits. And the amount of time and money that companies are spending complying with government rules and regulations. Companies used to offer better benefits and it didn't cost them as much as they are spending now on top of salaries.
Someone is buying what your benefits broker is selling

Seems that most companies here in Austin are super into providing in-office benefits rather than monetary benefits.
For example, my office brings in beer twice a week, has daily catered lunch, ping-pong, air hockey, pinball machines, Xboxes, etc.
No hookers and blow?

My health care is $9 a pay period. My 401k matches up to 4 or 5 %, I forget.
Other than that, I want all of my compensation in pay and I will pick my own "benefits" myself.

OT folks love to bash Europe, but then pine for standard European perks
America is too big and too stupid for things like that to work. It works in places like Switzerland because the entire country has the same population as new york city and is the size of Vermont and New Hampshire put together. So you can have a couple of major well funded universities that are free and everyone gets vacation and things like that.
America needs a major trimming of the fat however. We've had multiple threads about the obnoxious bloat of the publicly funded education system in Louisiana alone. There's no reason to have so many public colleges as that waters down the quality of both teachers and and students.
We need to massively overhaul the education system in this county. Less public colleges, more trade schools, and more internships. If companies require experience for entry level jobs then all education needs to switch to the upper tier system.
2 years of classroom learning, followed by funded internships where you gain real world experience while working towards your degree.

Not sure about most, but i do know that the railroads take damn good care of their employees. Where I lived at for while there is a Norfolk Southern Center. They had 2 job openings. There were over 3000 applicants for those 2 jobs mainly due to the benefits of the company. Their employees make so much in retirement income that they do not qualify for medicare or any other government programs for the elderly and retired.

"When my grandfather was working, companies took care of thier employees."
"Unions are evil and should be dismantled."
People spend 40 years taking power away from labor and then act surprised that labor doesn't have any power.
I'm sure the guy that nickel and dimes every one he does business with and gets most of his crap that he peddles made overseas will fix it, though.

You are making my point for me
good, cause I actually agree with you in principal.
quote:
First you tell me how I should just deal with it because my benefits are less valuable, then you tell me I have a bad attitude? Hmmm...
right, because the situation is what it is (sorry for the cliche). You can't change the benefits situation. So complaining about isn't productive. You can look for a better job or start your own company, but complaining wont do squat.
I also agree that employees are assets. And they should be nurtured, trained, and compensated for their effort, ability, and productivity.
But unlike other assets, employees can suck up all that training and compensation and leave an employer for arbitrary reasons thereby lowering if not negating the return on all that investment the employer put into that employee. And why does the employee leave? for a "better offer". So the employee is trying to cut the best deal for himself that he can. Same with the employer. Both are out for whats best for them.
Thats life. My point is, if you don't like the benefits at your job, get another one. I guarantee you the employer will not hesitate to replace you if necessary. But that's life. I don't see why anyone gets mad or wastes time bitching about it. Its like the recent floods. It happens. get busy dealing with it cause fussing about it wont get you anywhere.

These are all great, but if I have a health emergency these things will not do much..

But all I hear about is how millennials are unmotivated and lazy.
There are a lot of Old Economy Steves around these parts. Look at the Dr. Phil (of all the people they choose to champion) thread from yesterday.

Those millineals don't want to start at the bottom and work their way up anymore. They've got a degree so that makes them valuable.
As if this is actually an option. Start at the bottom and stay there unless you jump out for most companies.

Their income doesn't exclude them from Social Security, they're just covered under another program, the Railroad Retirement Board. They actually participate in Medicare as well, but you're correct in your assertion that their benefits are great.

Hmmm maybe I should own a medical equipment business once I graduate and practice as an occupational therapist.
Sounds like most people's benefits went to crap

Comparing America to Switzerland is dumb. Comparing America to continental Europe is more apt which was my point. Hell Germany has more than 80 million residents and many universities and it seems to work well.
quote:that is the exact system in germany for many positions.
