OT Mechanics, Me and the fine men of Autozone have surmised that I need a new battery. Rather than being pressured into purchasing one on the spot I thought it'd be smarter to do more research to make sure I wasn't paying something outrageous and wasn't buying something that was unnecessary. I'm fully confident I can replace it myself but just wanted some help picking one out. TIA

ETA: I was going to start with Costco unless given reason otherwise.

Pressured into buying one on the spot? You think that AutoZone baw works on commission or something? Just buy the damn battery and let them install it.

Just find you a service station with used batteries. They work just fine. You'll save a bundle. I bet they'll even put it in and jump start it for you.

Replacing a car battery is probably the easiest car maintenance activity there is.

Step 1) remove old battery

Step 2) put new battery in

Step 3) get a beer to celebrate your hard work

I pretty much assume at this point there are no more honest sales people who try to give you the best product. Only people trying to get you to spend as much as possible.

While I pray you're a chick OP, it wouldn't change my advice. You're not going to save any money bc any you may have saved will be burnt up in gas and value of time. Just buy a battery at the nearest place with car batteries Walmart, Autozone, etc.. Most of them will be around the same price and they will give you $10 for your old battery in trade plus Autozone will put it in for you free. (you don't exude confidence that this will turn out ok with you doing the replacing, sorry)

So you got the guy to check your car and not get the battery from him? I know he doesn’t make commission and prolly doesn’t make much, but at least buy the battery from the guy. I think they even would have installed it for free.

I am way more of a baw than I come off in this thread but I've only owned a car for 2 years so my experience with auto maintenance is low. I've been lucky enough that I haven't ever needed anything other than oil changes. From what I've seen cars seem to be the way most people get swindled out of a large amount of money very regularly. So i'm going to admit I'd rather ask for help and do things efficiently than pretend to be knowledgeable and get royally ripped off.

touch you tongue to the posts to see if the battery is still good....

battery is only 12v just slightly more then a 9v "square" battery...

its a dam battery, get one with a good life warranty and make sure it has the same or better cranking amps that the old one did....

EDIT: and from experience, most new car batteries last about 2 years.....

Are you sure? Battery replacement is a pretty basic task that every male who owns a car should know how to do it.

Ask the guy at autozone to show you the various batteries he has in stock that fit your car. You're basically paying for the expected lifespan.

I've never had to replace one before. I can replace it just fine, in fact I had to show the guy at Autozone where it was. He had initially hooked the testing device up to the alternator thinking it was the battery. I just wanted to make sure that the guy wasn't selling me something I didn't need.

Thanks baw. He basically gave me the options of how many years I wanted but i just wanted to make sure that wasn't some bullshite to try and get people who wouldn't know otherwise to spend more money.

Costco doesn't test batteries/starters/alternators. I wasn't sure what the issue was.
