Spinoff thread - Dont touch my fricking thread title edition

Spinoff of the other thread asking about employees who keep tabs on others.
What's everyone's thought on what people in similar positions get paid?
I had this conversation with a colleague. We both got really nice raises and were happy. He then found out that people being brought on 2 roles lower than us were being paid not that much less and was kinda pissed about it.
I don't understand this. He asked me how I felt and I told him that I was happy for them. And that we were likely not making that much less than people that were in our current roles when we were brought on and I doubt we thought that was unfair.
I can't see being anything other than happy someone else is getting paid, regardless of their role/status/etc. My thought is that if I cared that much about getting "my worth" I would start my own business.
Again, please discuss.

I don’t pocket watch other people, but if I’m not being paid commensurate to my market value or position within the organization, I absolutely care. If I’m tasked with more responsibility but feel I’m not being compensated accordingly, I’m going to be pissed. I have to benchmark that based on what other people are being paid.

You can't be mad about what other people are getting paid, but it is frustrating knowing some people producing and responsible for less are being compensated better than you are.
Hate the game, not the player type of deal.

I agree to an extent, with the caveat being that it doesn't occur to me at all to be frustrated with someone else regardless of their output/responsibilities.
That's the part I can't wrap my head around. What does that other person have to do with me?

Wherever you work, someone will be getting paid more for less or less for more. You want to be somewhere in the middle.
I became an Operations Director for a small company once. Wearing a lot of hats; lots of turnover. Eventually I became the guy I never wanted to be. In charge/control of everything but working around the clock on call while others twiddled their thumbs including our absolute worthless COO working my arse in the ground while he vacationed around the world.
I left for a bigger company and lesser role. I’m now a senior VP and will never over extend myself again. The hard work got me here but I know I never need to be in survival mode again.
The biggest thing to get over is not letting people down. I never wanted to let my guys down but at the end of the day, it’s a job. Never overextend yourself. It’s never worth it.

agreed. Only salary that should matter is yours.

I doubt he is pissed at the other people.
There are some issues though that are worthy of being upset about (assuming they are getting paid above market rate for their position, which is what the post makes it sound like). The company is valuing being new over commitment and loyalty to to the company. While the raise is a sign of appreciation of the work being done, they are basing it off of an undervalued starting point.
Now, the flip side to this is both of you have the ability to negotiate more. If you think you are being underpaid for your position in the market, make that argument but be prepaird for the outcomes. If you can get more elsewhere, go for it. If they don't accomodate, you have to accept the fact that you are with a company that doesn't want to pay you the correct rate for your position and experience and will overpay people for being new to incentivize them accepting the job. Is that a company worth working for long term?

Comparison is the thief of joy. If you like what you make, great! If you think you’re underpaid, work harder to earn more money or find another job. You’ll be a miserable bastard if you concern yourself with other’s income.

However corporate America managed to convince us it's a faux pas to openly discuss salaries with coworkers, friends, colleagues, etc., they sure did a bang up job.
I think there would be a lot of people pissed off if they learned what everyone around them makes.

Our industry is pretty open. We know generally (within 5k) what our peers make.
It doesn't make a lick of difference.
Also, who the frick edited my thread title?

I worked for the Fed Gov for over 32 years. The pay scales for every position are public. Yes, there were lots of people in higher grades than me that did sod all. But I retired (19 years ago) in the highest technical grade there was. So, I got that going for me.
