Had a Dyno Nitro

Still have some trophies from races I won back at childhood home

I lived in the woods and my father got so tired of my friends and I digging up the vacant lot next door to make jumps and tracks, he had 150 sq ft of clay delivered one year for my birthday. Best present ever. I had the best course in the county

My buddy down the block had an anodized blue aluminum Race Inc. frame/fork...I remember how amazingly light it was when I first lifted his bike up.

My FIL owns the bike shop in Houma. He's been selling bikes since the early 80's. Says it's unreal how sales have dropped the past 8 years or so. Not as many kids riding anymore. It's a shame...so many good memories on my bike as a kid.

That sucks. On a related note...do kids even ride skate boards anymore??

Powell Perolta deck, Independent trucks and Powell Perolta wheels. Not that BS Razor shite from Academy.

Some friends of mine that their mom was a circuit court judge and had tons of money had a half pipe. So much fricking fun on the bikes and skateboards!!!

Bike wise I had a Mongoose.

Skateboard I built myself. Ordered a blank board out of the back of a magazine which I hand-painted myself and it was finished off with a set of Independent trucks and vert wheels.

Also started out at 10 on a Kawasaki KX 80. Then moved up to a 125. Never had a 250. When I turned 14 I had my mom talked into buying me a Ninja 250, but the owner of the bike shop fricked up and told her how fast it would go. That was the end of that.

That looks a lot like my old bike - Mongoose with those heavy steel mags. I also had big lug mud tires that would hum. My favorite thing to do with my bike was ride trails between the neighborhoods (we thought of it as the woods) or go mud riding.

What that bike lacked in light-weight freestyle ability was made up for in toughness. If for some reason you did something to bend that rim, I'd have to think the rider would be damn near dead. We did the dumbest things on those bikes and they never broke. No broken spokes, bent frames or wheels. You couldn't bunny hop well, but if you ran into a tree going down a hill it was ok.

When the LSU lakes were dredged, they pumped the mud over to form Baton Rouge beach. For a year or so that was like a playground for any kid with a BMX bike. Every afternoon I'd go ride, then have to spray everything off with the hose - bike, shoes, clothes.

One summer day after 4th of July, I rigged up pipe sections from my old jungle gym and connected them through the circular hole on the front of the frame to make a bottle rocket launcher. We'd ride around and I'd shoot fireworks at cars, joggers, whoever.

That summer, maybe after 6th grade, was the pinnacle of my riding days. It was like there was nothing we couldn't do. I can't imagine getting that same feeling from an iPad.

I had the Montgomery Wards special. Cranks were always loose, stickers peeled, headset rusted but I rode that mf into the ground!

I had a Diamond back Viper like this.

Then a Kuwahara like this.

We would build a ramp out of literally anything that could make a ramp. Old utility cable spools, baptist church folding tables, etc. I was the "new ramp tester" in my neighborhood. Kids today don't know what they're missing. No helmets, no pads, no safety gear whatsoever. Still got a scar on my shin from those freaking bear claw pedals.

We used go out riding in the morning when the newspapers were delivered and brake lock the back wheel as we rode over the newspapers. If you did it right, you'd drag the paper under the back wheel while you skid and shredded the paper into confetti. In hindsight, it was a total dick move. But it made perfect sense at the time for us 11 year old boys. It was logical. It seemed wrong NOT to do it.

I still have mine. A 1970 Honda Mini Trail 50. We used to fold the handlebars down and put it in the back of the Buick Estate Wagon and go to the country. It is in my barn and it still runs. Bought from G.N. Gonzales.

One of the best gifts that I have ever received in my 50 years. Of all the things I had as a kid, I probably remember my Trail 50 the most. I lived on a farm and rode that thing a million miles.
