Granddaddy used to handle snakes in church, Granny drank strychnine. I guess you could say I had a leg up, genetically speaking.

The Pentecostal people I know are relaxed and will even have drinks on occasion. It may just be their particular family though. They attend one of the largest Pentecostal churches in the area.

Yea, it's their family. I went to a Pentecostal wedding just recently, and the atmosphere seemed more like a funeral than a wedding. And there was no alcohol allowed at the reception.

Many millennial aged Pentecostals are leaving the more traditional UPC in droves due to the misogynistic and archaic traditions of the church in regards to outward appearances. Rather than approach spiritual living from a principled approach - dressing modestly, maybe a drink here and there is ok but not getting shite-faced drunk, not watching pron, etc, the UPC is all about a rules based approach, NO TV, NO alcohol, NO beach going with the opposite sex, women can't wear pants or shorts. This has alienated many members and I feel the church will dissolve to obscurity at some point.

Serious question, what is the theory or belief behind these practices such as no tv, skirts, Etc?

Also what if, just what if one of them watches tv or someone jumps in the pool from the opposite sex. Is there confession for your sins?

I love the kid on the front row with the gray shirt and the blue jeans just sitting there with his arms folded.

To me the rules stuff is not nearly as strange as the spiritual beliefs and practices. Speaking in tongues, flopping on the floor, prophesies, healings, the rapture, conspiracy theories, etc.

I realize this is not exclusive to Pentecostals and not all Pentecostals believe all of these things.

There is no formal confession like in Catholicism.

As far as biblical references for the "no pants" thing, it's from Deuteronomy 22:5 - "A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this." Hoever when read in context it's right in the middle of ancient laws that were laid out, like building rails on your roof so someone can't fall off or helping someone who falls off their donkey when traveling. Most believe it is referring to deliberate cross dressing to disguise who you are rather than fast forwarding 4000 years in the future and talking about pants. It most likely was borne out during WWII when women were assuming male roles due to the war. I guess church leaders didn't like their women putting on pants and leaving the kitchen, so to speak.

The TV thing just an extension "don't put anything evil in front of you." Unfortunately church leaders allowed ministers and saints to have computers with Internet access. I personally know of a few that didn't have TVs but had computers and left their spouses for people they found online. Again just illustrating the ridiculousness of having rules versus principles.

I agree that witnessing it all can be disconcerting. It is all biblically based however. Having grown up in it it was always cringe worthy when I had a friend over at church and that stuff happened. But I don't just dismiss other people's spiritual experiences even if I may disagree with their outward expression of the experience.

Personally for me, living a spiritual life has been rewarding and a positive influence on me and my family. Even if at the end it's all hocus pocus and voodoo and I'm doomed to just rot away in a box underground, I won't have any regrets for choosing this path in life.

So many chuckle-heads want to take every verse out of context, yet never bother to read the Bible, especially the Old Testament, in context.

I don't mind having a logical argument or discussion with some people, but so many lack even the most basic knowledge of the topic. Not worth the effort, usually...

I can remember the Walmart in Baker being the social gathering spot for Pentecostal women. Pentecostal poufs everywhere.
