It varies. 1.5 to 3 depending on traffic.
Lol. It's 1.5 if you drive Sunday morning at 4am.
During normal hours it's at least 3.5 hours, it took me 6 hours once on a Friday late morning departure.

You should stay on the westside, ideally Santa Monica; that way at least you'll be driving against traffic if you plan to drive far and you'll be centrally located. You can do the Pier, the Promenade, Main Street Santa Monica is cool too, you'll be close enough to the Getty and the Getty Villa (different location), close to Malibu, Venice, and even Hermosa or Manhattan Beach piers. Rodeo Drive isn't too far away either.
This is excellent advice. Stay out of Hollywood, it's a complete shite show. Tons of gutter trash and tourists. No need to go east of fairfax.

You'd probably enjoy San Diego more unless you are tied to L.A.
I use to enjoy Carlsbad
What's the drive from L.A. to SD 1.5 hours?
I just did a San Diego to LA roadtrip with my son for his Senior Year Spring Break last month. We started in Coronado and ended up in LA with a final pit stop in Phoenix to watch the Rangers play some Spring ball.
We pit stopped in Oceanside after 3 days in SD and made the drive to LA from there in about 1.5 hours (although we waited till about 0900 to leave for LA traffic to kinda die).

Dodgers game is a must. Get a dodger dog
Hike the Hollywood sign. The view is extremely rewarding
Eat at Canters deli on Fairfax. The pastrami is great
Tommy's chili burgers
Korea Town for any and all Korean food
If you like dive bars, Smog Cutter is a cool place to drink
The Kibitz Room attached to Canters is a great people watching spot. L.A. is flush with weirdos
The Improv usually has a big name comic drop in and do 10 minutes if you want to "see a celebrity" while in town
UCLA's campus is gorgeous
Pacific coast highway up to Malibu is also a must
