The well she fell into was too narrow to get her out so they had to dig a second shaft and then another horizontal one.

According to the link it was mostly because they were jack hammering sideways.

After a number of hours, it became clear that this rescue mission would not be over that day, so a local mining engineer arrived to assist. Six hours later, an additional parallel shaft was built, but it would be harder to make a connection tunnel. Jackhammers weren’t designed to work sideways, after all.

including the rescuer of the toddler who ended up killing himself a few years afterwards due to a form of PTSD related to the rescue.
IIRC he was a new firefighter in that town and received so much publicity that it changed him. He became a heavy drinker and once the cameras went away couldn't get back to his old lifestyle. I don't remember everything but there is a documentary about it and him. He ended up I think not being able to hold down a job and kept drinking heavily and then killed himself. He got depressed once his 15 minutes of fame was up. As a medic/firefighter myself, he was in the fire service for the wrong reasons.

I remember coming home from high school football practice in 1987 and this was on. I thought they weren't going to show the NLCS that night between the Giants and Cardinals, but they did.
