He pled guilty to animal cruelty. He actually was reinstated like 3-4 years later.

How could you do this to the animal you spend your day with and consider your partner? Stupid.

I don't think this is ever done purposefully, and I don't mean the death, I'm referring to the act of even leaving it in the car at the time. It's not like they said "oh he can stay for a little while" and forgot. They just got got out and didn't remember he was back there.

The guy in the NOPD example with K-9 Primo almost lost his mind after.

The officer had only been a handler for 3 weeks. What a moron.

Gunner served for 6 years:

Horrible story.

I get it. But you have a responsibility to that animal who has no way to control his environment and I'd probably go out of my way to check his wellbeing at certain intervals no matter what was happening. Accident happen I guess.

So we charge this cop with negligent manslaughter of a police officer, right?

Surprised you have 100+ up-votes, 0 down-votes.

People actually don't feel the same about parents who leave their babies in the car to bake to death. I actually agree with you. Accident or not, tragic or not, if you leave a baby (or a dog) in a car to bake to death, you should absolutely be charged with a crime.

Thread from last year where people made every effort to defend a parent who left her child in the car to die: LINK

Alachua county (uf) sheriff officer tom willcox has killed 2 of his dogs. 1 was a retired partner, executed in his yard via bullet to the head... the 2nd, a short 8 years later, was cooked in the back of his patrol car. No charges on either incident. Never fired, but was finally removed as a k9 officer.

You may be missing the point of his statement, in many if not most municipalities if you or I kill a police dog during the course of a crime we would actually be charged with killing a police officer. He is implying that the same standard should obviously be used in this case.

LINK

This guy received a 45 year prison sentence for killing a police dog during a robbery, they take this stuff seriously where a everyday citizen is the culprit, but apparently not so much when the officer is negligent.

Leave the cop in a car for a day.

I understand his point. But if you say that this police officer killed the dog - and I believe he did - then you also have to say that parents who left their kids in the car killed them. I think both parties (the officer and the parent) should be guilty of a major crime. I can't imagine a worse way to die. And I can't imagine the level of neglect and absentmindedness it takes to leave a dog or a kid in a car.

Well, my point is that if I hurt or kill a cop K9, I get charged as if they were an actual cop. This guy should get the same treatment.

If a cop does it then it's just a dog.
If a citizen does it then it's a police officer.

You can kill someone by accident and still be guilty of a form of homicide. For purposes of prosecuting offenders, police dogs are treated as people. If a civilian accidentally left a helpless person in a hot car and they died, they would definitely be going to jail.

You're (and OP) missing the point that a robbery can't be equated to negligence. Nevertheless, frick this cop.
