Spends every work day with the dog but forgot and left it in a hot car? And this person is trusted with enforcing the law?

Someone already played that troll. Use another one

Same goes for parents who forget they have a kid in the backseat. How in the hell do you just forget your child is with you?

Used to practice in that neck of the woods and am familiar with some of the folks in the law enforcement community there. Ain't gonna go well for that officer, regardless of the official punishment.

I have a K9 officer on my team at work. He ALWAYS leaves the engine running and tries to park under the shade whenever possible. In the heat it's pretty much the first thing on his mind.
I think he's required to keep the vehicle at 85 degrees or below.

This year's "police dog left in car" deaths:
This one caused the handler to breakdown:
These are from Officer Down Memorial Page
quote:
K9 Endy died after suffering heat exhaustion when he was unintentionally left in his handler's patrol truck following their shift.

K9 Mojo died after unintentionally being left in his handler's patrol car following their shift. His handler had returned home and became distracted due to an incident involving his newborn child. K9 Mojo was located in the back of the patrol car approximately four hours later.
This one caused the handler to breakdown:
quote:
K9 Aron died after suffering heat exhaustion when his handler's patrol car suffered a mechanical malfunction, causing the vehicle and it's hot box backup system to shut off.
quote:
K9 Drago died when the air conditioner in his handler's vehicle failed. His handler had gone to the Oak Forest Police Department to process an offender who had just been arrested. While the handler was inside the air conditioner failed and began blowing hot air. Rescue personnel rendered aid to Drago but were unable to save him.

K9 Diesel died after being accidentally left in his handler's patrol car at the Brevard County Courthouse in Melbourne, Florida.
quote:
K9 Doki died of heat exhaustion after a mechanical malfunction in his handler's patrol car. The vehicle's heat rose to an unsafe level while Doki was inside. Once his handler discovered him he was taken to a veterinary hospital where he died.

I understand forgetting a kid, but forgetting a dog in a hot car?? WTF man?!

If a civilian killed a police dog, he would be charged with homicide of a police officer. Police dogs are treated the same as human police officers for purposes of punishing those who kill or assault them. If that's the policy, then it shouldn't change just because the perp is himself a cop.

This was an accident, not on purpose. There is a difference. Also, K9s practically live inside their handler's vehicle when on the job. When that much time is spent being inside I'm not surprised that it's happened many times before.
I would think there should be an alarm system for when the temp inside reaches an unacceptable level. That doesn't seem difficult at all to incorporate. Maybe even make the alarm the actual siren.

I'm sure the officer feels worse than anyone about this. These guys love their dogs.

So the next time a citizen accidentally kills a K9, I am sure the popo will say the same thing?
I have a feeling an "oopsy" moment for the average citizen ends up in felonies and significant prison time.

I put a new interior and headliner into an old car. Moronic friend "checks out the interior" but doesn't shut the door. Nosy arse cat goes into car. Friend thinks "oh the door is open" so he shuts it - cat in car.
It was winter and the cat survived. However, he pissed and shite all over the car, ravaged the headliner and tore up the entire interior. So, I gave up restoring the car as a second interior wasn't worth it.
