Pit bull owners in South Carolina who don’t spay or neuter their dogs could be forced to pay a $500 fee, and face a misdemeanor if they don’t, according to a new bill filed in the state House of Representatives.

According to the proposal, sponsored by Rep. Chip Huggins, “The pit bull dog is the most desired breed for dogfighting and is dying at a higher rate in local animal shelters than any other breed of dog in South Carolina.”

“Fertile dogs are more likely to be territorial and therefore more likely to bite. Most dog bite fatalities are committed by dogs that were not altered,” Huggins, a Lexington County Republican, argues in the text of the bill.

The bill would require pit bull owners to sterilize and microchip their dogs or pay a $500 fee. If an owner does not register a pit bull and pay the fee, they could be charged with a misdemeanor, fined at least $1,000 and jailed for up to a year.

Hopefully this is just the beginning to stop the growth of these dangerous animals.

Ah, the breed of peace.

Cue the defensive mullets coming out of the wood work.

It's a public safety issue. I'm one of the most pro-law enforcement posters on this board. Our police have been attacked by shite bulls. Need to get rid of them.

Can you provide statistics to back up your claim of a public safety issue?

See, you are fear mongering just like those you oppose. The burden of proof is on you not me.

This is an extremely lame response. Unless you are an anarchist, then public safety is one of the responsibilities of government. And this is done on a state and local level, not federal.

I see no issues with this law from a small government perspective.

Do you think no form of pet ownership, including exotic big cats and poisonous snakes, should be restricted or monitored by government?

Did I say no restrictions? No. I asked for data showing a public safety issue and he linked Google home page. That's a lame response.
