Kid did good. Step dad will threaten to leave. Wife will blame herself and son. Cycle continues. Wife deserves it if she let's him back. You can't fix people that don't want help.

He may not need to go. He may be a great guy in 999 ways out of 1000.
He stepped over the line, was corrected, and may be a model husband for the rest of his life. We do not know his actions before or after slapping her.
My guess is that when school was over, he got an "A" in keeping his hands to himself.
