re: Son Enlisting in Marines -- Question about MEPS

Tell him to be honest about medical issues and get waivers. Having a clean conscience and record is a much better way to start military life than getting screwed when he reinjures his broken pinky finger that he lied about because his recruiter didn't want to drive him back to meps twice. I went to meps 10+ times for medical waivers. Pissed my recruiter off royally. Dont let some clown who is getting paid to drive you to New Orleans potentially affect your 8 year commitment and veterans benefits because he doesn't want to come back the next day.

My experience in the Army was great. It wasn't always fun (though sometimes it was), but it made me a better person. You get to know your countrymen, learn a trade, serve the US, and travel. The discipline and hard work that was expected of me is something I expect of myself and others in the workplace today.
You also learn to confront the fear of the unknown, which it sounds like you were unable to do and backed out.

Any pitfalls to avoid?
1. Don't mention childhood medical issues that are no longer issues unless brought up by the doc. If brought up, downplay them (esp something like asthma). But don't lie on the form.
2. If he's experimented with marijuana or spice, tell him not to make it sound like he was some stoner or regular user. "Tried it once" would be ideal, but limit it to "tried it a couple of times." If he's tried anything else, I'm not advising him to lie, but it could be disqualifying. Other boyish criminal hijincks aren't going to close the door (MIP, non-injurious fight, etc), but anything more serious will be problematic. If he's ever gotten into trouble don't go the "his friends were actually doing x, but he just got caught up in it." That won't fly and they'll hate the explanation as much as the charge.

All good tips.
He is sure about it.
He has no criminal record.
He tried marijuana about a year ago. None since. Yeah, I know. But I know.

The most important thing he needs to know is that "Oh" is not a number... it's ZERO.
0 = zero
O = oh
0 = zero
O = oh

Shouldn't be a big deal.
I wish your son my best. We talk a lot of trash around here, but the profession of arms is still an honorable and necessary occupation--whether he's a one-termer or a lifer. Tell him to keep his nose clean, do his best, learn to be a good follower, learn to be a good leader, and have some fun along the way.

Something tells me you don't understand what a military does.

Actually I take that back, you are a disgrace for even attempting to troll something related to the military
Oh shut up and get off your high horse.

It's in his nature. It is just who he is as a man.
This is not a subtle brag. My oldest is adopted, so this is not a boast about my superior genes. I'm average as a parent, and I was a complete eff up when I was his age, so I won't say I led him down this path.
He's just a fine young man. I am so proud of him.

I remember your earlier post. Don't worry he'll be fine.
Presumably his recruiter will have properly coached him respecting MEPS Q&A and the urine test and physical are routine.
The MCRD line moved a few years back I think. Parris Island or San Diego?
Had your son enlisted a few months earlier, my youngest son might have been able to instruct him in some of the finer points during his time at San Diego.
Tell your son thanks and good luck.

It's been a while (1992) since I was at MEPS but I remember Lurch telling me to bend over and spread. That was the most uncomfortable moment but, other than a really long day, it isn't too bad.
Here's to the best!!!

I was there as a potential officer so I had it easier as I didn't have to wait as much, but the enlisted guys did a lot of sitting around.
I went to MEPS at Belle Chase as an officer and still had it bad
That place is literally the gateway to hell

I was in the Marine Reserves from '88-'94. It's still not too late to switch from active duty to the Reserves. Not sure of his MOS, but if he's going active duty, tell him to choose an MOS that provides him with a skill that will translate to the real world...don't be a grunt, unless he wants to go into law enforcement.
Go Reserves first and if he likes that, he can always go active duty later. JMO
