. This a fairly recent policy down from full business and they've had issues with it but everyone keeps in line. Yesterday, this geeky frick comes in wearing sweatshirt T-shirt. This arises complaints from some of the higher ups and several of the managers make their way by his desk to remind him how much it'd suck to have to go back to full business. He shrugs them off.

I agree that the geeky frick is being a frickhead. Some pieces of shite just don't care if they ruin it and will take a mile if you give an inch.

However, the higher ups don't have anything better to do? Unless he is in contact with customers or the public, who gives a frick? Just my personal opinion if I was the higher up in your company.

My subordinates don't come into contact with customers, so as long as it isn't considered offensive, they can wear it. The one rule being closed toed shoes to meet OSHA regulations.

Looks like you served the ball and they volleyed it right back to you. Nicely played by the geeks.

Your turn.

Sounds like they had a "They can't fire ALL of us!" group text the previous night.

I guess I've never worked a big corporate office, but is it really that big of a deal for someone's boss to tell them they need to follow the dress code and fire them if they don't listen?

See this is where a lack of perspective comes into play. Of course it seems like nothing. But the guys and girls who do toe the line get p!ssed off when someone else doesn't.

Why do I want to deal with all of them being annoyed and talking amongst themselves and potentially creating a source of gossip and petty BS when I can walk by his desk and tell him that shirt isn't appropriate and you can't wear it to work anymore. Follow up with an e-mail and say, "Look, just for HR's sake, this is the follow-up to our convo at your desk. That shirt isn't work appropriate. You know our policy. If you have questions, let me know."

Attach a read receipt.

If it happens again, "Hey, too busy to come by your desk. Take off for the day. We chatted about your shirt before and I really thought that would be the extent of it. If you can't remember the dress code or you have problems with it, let me know. You won't be getting paid for the rest of this afternoon and this is gonna go in your file. If I have to e-mail or come to you about this again, we will have real issues, Employee Douchnozzle.

Don't let it come to that. These rules were here before you, and I was hired in part to make sure they're followed. This isn't worth your time or mine. We have work to do. If you have questions, let me know."

Attach a read receipt.

If he wears it again...

Print the previous two e-mails w/read receipts
Print the dress code policy
Have a witness come into your office
Go by his desk and ask him to walk with you to your office
Fire him

This would take a grand total of about 45 minutes-MAX-of your work life.

But to be able to avoid having the rest of the office get p!ssed at him, create gossip or have him motivating other people to break rules that may come down on YOU as a supervisor when anyone above you complains about it...It's absolutely worth it.

The one making things hard is the douchenozzle. Not the supervisor. But to take care of it doesn't take much effort on the part of the supervisor. I promise.

A custom solution for the person in question is much better than lowering morale by punishing everyone...and yes, in medium sized companies (and even some small ones) this sh!t happens.

You really have no clue...Which is not a big deal and its really not some shot I'm taking at you. But an office environment or work environment or any professional environment can go from Zero to Baptist Church Deacon's Meetings in terms of their politics or polarization over way more ridiculous stuff.

It's policy. Ridiculous policy. It's not hard to adhere to. Do it or we'll find someone we have to manage or supervise less.

If the supervisor is getting heat from above him for it and then gets casual dress taken away from everyone underneath him as a result, then it's not just the employee at fault. It's the supervisor as well.

Which is why the supervisor has to do his job, even if it seems silly...Because everyone hates him when he sends out that casual dress is over. Only now they hate him AND the employee that caused it.

It's Mickey Mouse sh!t, but that's the whole point. If an employee needs supervision this closely over the Mickey Mouse sh!t, he's not the right employee in the first place.

Mine are off unless its external communication with someone I know I need documented proof later on regarding the nature of the conversation. Just sending it isn't enough. Gotta prove they read it.

I'd say <5% of my e-mails have them attached.

But for the Mickey Mouse stuff its a necessity.
