I could be wrong but I don't think she'd pay income tax on the proceeds from the sale of the car

That money was already taxed when she took possession

I'm no accountant though so I'm probably wrong

Why can't she take out an auto loan to pay the taxes and fees? Use the car as collateral?

she won't have title of the car to get that loan

it's a catch-22

she can't get the title before she pays taxes, and would need to have the title to get a loan to pay those taxes

As long as she could qualify for a 50-60K auto loan

Judging by the amount of yukons and suburbans I see around town, it can't be that hard

Most people don't have the title when they get a loan. NBD.

so she's going to have to get a serious loan shark type loan to ever get that car (to sell to pay off the loan shark)

she can get a loan with the car as collateral, say the tax is 40%....banks would line up to loan her 48k on a car worth 120k

She can. There are multiple credit unions around where they film gameshows that specialize in those type of short term loans at high interest rates. If she happens to have good credit (which most tPIR contestants do not), then she could probably just get a normal car loan to pay the taxes, then sell it and pay off the loan and keep the profit.

Here's how it usually works

Contestant wins $25,000 car.
CA requires $10,000 in taxes to take possession of car.
Contestant doesn't have $10,000, so they either walk away with nothing, or
Specialty loan for 90 days at 25% interest. They effectively borrow $12,500 for $10,000 (like a title loan)
They take the car, its worth $20,000 if they sell it. They sell it, pocket $7,500. Still a good payday for them, but hardly the $25,000 they thought they won.

I think a lot of people in this thread are spouting off third-party nonsense. I.E none of you know what you are talking about and have never known anyone to win anything on a game show.

you don't need to know anyone from a game show to know tax laws and how loans work

but continue to add nothing to this thread just like every other one you post in

There's already a wide range of baseless information in this thread. You have no idea what goes on behind those closed doors.
